There are comic characters… and then there’s John Constantine.
Chain-smoking occult con man. Manipulator. Survivor. Walking disaster.
And somehow, one of the coolest characters DC ever created.
What makes Hellblazer stand out to me is that it never tried to make Constantine a traditional superhero. He wasn’t about saving the world with fists or flashy powers. He survived through lies, schemes, dark magic and sheer nerve.
And more often than not, people around him paid the price.
This first issue really set the tone for what the series would become: horror mixed with politics, addiction, religion, demons and brutal human flaws.
The cover itself feels unsettling in the best way possible. It looks dirty, haunted and almost uncomfortable to stare at — which is honestly perfect for Constantine.
And seeing that “Suggested for Mature Readers” box on an old DC book always hits differently. This was part of the era where comics started pushing into darker and more adult storytelling in a major way.
A CGC 9.0 White Pages copy of this classic is something I’m very happy to have sitting in the collection.
