There was just something different about late-90s foil and holofoil books when they hit under the light. Modern covers can be gorgeous, but these older chromium and holofoil editions had this almost over-the-top collectible feel to them that instantly screams comic shop nostalgia.
And Michael Turner… man. His art style was instantly recognizable.
The way he drew Sara Pezzini, the water reflections, the lighting, the atmosphere — even with all the holofoil flash happening here, the cover still feels moody and cinematic. That was one of Turner’s biggest strengths. His covers could be flashy while still feeling elegant.
This was also during that era where Witchblade was absolutely everywhere. Top Cow books had a massive following, and Sara Pezzini became one of the defining “bad-girl era” characters alongside Lady Death, Fathom, Vampirella and others.
Getting holofoil books in high grade is always nice because these covers love showing defects. A 9.8 on a late-90s gimmick cover is never something I complain about adding to the collection.
And honestly? The holofoil shimmer on this one looks even better in person than in photos.
