I’ve always loved when publishers do sketch variants correctly, and this one absolutely nails it.
The massive amount of empty white space makes the detailed linework stand out even harder. Lewis and Clark standing calmly on top of a mountain of grotesque creatures is such a simple but incredibly effective image.
And if you’ve never read Manifest Destiny… it’s basically historical exploration mixed with straight-up nightmare fuel.
The series took the Lewis and Clark expedition and turned it into a horror survival story filled with monsters, mutations and dark supernatural Americana. Honestly one of the coolest concepts Image/Skybound put out during that era.
This anniversary sketch edition feels almost like unfinished concept art from a horror film, which makes it even more unique compared to standard full-color covers.
Definitely one of the cleaner minimalist slabs in my collection — and one that people tend to stare at longer once they notice all the creature details packed into the bottom half.
