🦝💥 Incredible Hulk #271 (1982)
Sometimes a character’s first comic-book appearance happens long before anyone realizes just how important that character is going to become.

• 📅 May 1982
• ✍️ Bill Mantlo
• 🎨 Sal Buscema
• 🖼️ Cover by Al Milgrom
• 🔑 First comic-book appearance of Rocket Raccoon
• 📊 9.6 White Pages
Rocket actually predates this issue—an earlier version appeared as Rocky Raccoon in Marvel Preview #7 (1976)—but Hulk #271 is where Rocket Raccoon as we know him makes his comic debut.
The story, appropriately titled “Now Somewhere In the Black Holes of Sirius Major There Lived a Young Boy Named Rocket Raccoon!”, sends Hulk into one of the wonderfully strange corners of Marvel's cosmic universe. Rocket, Wal Rus, the Keystone Quadrant and the bizarre conflict surrounding Halfworld are a long way from the street-level adventures many people associate with Hulk.
Decades later, Rocket would become a core member of the modern Guardians of the Galaxy, eventually becoming one of Marvel's most recognizable characters worldwide.
That's what makes books like Hulk #271 so much fun to collect. In 1982, Rocket was an obscure talking raccoon appearing alongside Hulk. Today, he's a Marvel icon.
And that Al Milgrom cover—with Hulk staring at Rocket like even he can't believe what's happening—is perfect. 😂
