There’s something special about these early Walking Dead books.
Before the TV phenomenon… before the massive speculation market… before everyone started hunting down key appearances… this series was just a brutally honest survival horror comic slowly building a cult following issue by issue.
And single-digit Walking Dead books have become incredibly collectible because of that.
Issue #9 especially feels like the series settling into the darker emotional tone that would eventually define the franchise. Kirkman never played it safe, and characters could disappear at any moment.
That unpredictability is exactly what made early Walking Dead so addictive.
And this cover has that classic bleak Walking Dead atmosphere.
The isolation, the ruined environment, the muted colors — Tony Moore captured the hopelessness of the world perfectly. Even without a giant zombie battle on the cover, you instantly feel the tension.
A CGC 9.0 on an early 2004 Walking Dead issue is still a very respectable grade too, especially considering how many of these were heavily read long before the collector boom hit.
These early Image-era Walking Dead books continue to feel like modern horror history at this point. 🧟🔥
