One thing Marvel absolutely nailed during the 2000s was sketch variants.
These covers always felt classy without needing flashy gimmicks. Just pencils, shadows, detail, and atmosphere.
And this Nick Fury piece has attitude all over it.
Fury standing front and center with the sniper rifle while the heroes loom behind him perfectly captures the paranoia of Secret Invasion. Nobody trusted anybody during this storyline, and Fury looked like one of the only people prepared for the worst from the beginning.
The raw pencil work here is incredible too. You can really appreciate McNiven’s detail when there’s no heavy color distracting from the art.
This whole Secret Invasion run was a huge deal back then. Marvel leaned hard into the “Who is a Skrull?” mystery, and it turned nearly every issue into an event book.
These sketch variants have aged really well because they feel timeless compared to some of the flashier modern covers.
A CGC 9.4 White Pages copy is still a beautiful collector-grade book from one of Marvel’s most memorable modern crossover eras.
