Would you like to help design next-generation underwater technology for sustainable aquaculture?
At Biosort, we develop advanced underwater systems that combine machine vision, robotics, optics, and biometric data to enable individual treatment and monitoring of farmed fish. Our technology is installed in salmon cages and contributes to improved fish welfare, increased sustainability, and lower production costs for fish farmers.
We are a 15-year-old company, but our current commercial product direction has taken shape over the last 1.5 years. That means you will join at an exciting stage: building on deep technical learning and prior product experience, while helping mature a new generation of compact, high-performance underwater products.
We are strengthening our product development team with an experienced Mechanical Engineer who can help take advanced electro-mechanical products from promising prototypes to robust, manufacturable, and scalable solutions.
This is not a role for someone who only wants to work in a narrow box. At Biosort, mechanical engineering sits at the centre of the product: structures, sealing, motion systems, interfaces, compact packaging, manufacturability, and reliability all come together in one highly integrated underwater system.
If you enjoy solving difficult 3D engineering problems, working through fast test-and-learn cycles, and taking ownership of real product challenges in harsh environments, this could be a rare opportunity.
What you’ll do
Design and develop electro-mechanical modules, assemblies, and product architecture for underwater use, typically at 5–30 meters depth.
Work across the full product development cycle: concept development, CAD design, prototype builds, testing, iteration, and production readiness.
Help mature existing prototypes into robust commercial products by identifying failure modes, improving weak points, and driving design refinements.
Design for volume production, including materials, manufacturing methods, tolerance chains, sealing concepts, cable routing, assembly processes, and cost reduction.
Solve highly compact 3D integration problems across mechanics, optics, electronics, motors, sensors, and structural interfaces.
Participate in verification and reliability work, including testing in our salt-water pool, at sea near Oslo, and in fish-farm environments along the west coast and in Northern Norway.
Support supplier and manufacturing development, including DFM input, sourcing variation, quality issues, and qualification of components and partners.
Collaborate closely with test, production, electronics, optics, software, and embedded teams to ensure performance, manufacturability, and reliability.
Contribute where needed across modules and subsystems — from mechanisms and structural details to manufacturability and field feedback.
How we work
Biosort’s mechanical team is small and highly involved. Today, the team consists of two mechanical engineers — and this hire will be the third.
That means:
you will work very close to the core product
you will have high ownership and visibility
you will work in short, practical iterations with little distance from testing, production, and leadership
We do not always verify every isolated detail before integrating it. Instead, we often move quickly by implementing multiple solutions into prototypes, testing them under demanding real-world conditions, learning fast, and iterating. This approach gives us speed and momentum — but it also requires engineers who are comfortable with ambiguity, risk, and scientific problem-solving when things do not work the first time.
A big part of the role is helping us close the “last 20%”: the hard work of verification, root-cause analysis, design refinement, quality stabilization, and industrialization.
For the right person, that is where the fun begins.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a senior mechanical engineer who combines strong product engineering fundamentals with the ability to work quickly, practically, and clearly in a highly integrated environment.
The three areas we care most about - In this role, we place particular emphasis on three capabilities:
1. 3D problem-solving ability
You are strong at understanding and solving spatial, compact, multi-interface mechanical problems. You can rotate systems in your head, think in assemblies, and work effectively in CAD to resolve packaging, movement, tolerances, interfaces, and serviceability in real products.
2. Technical communication
You can communicate mechanical ideas clearly — verbally, visually, and in writing. You are able to explain concepts, discuss trade-offs, sketch ideas, align with others quickly, and work through complex design issues in close collaboration with colleagues.
3. Engineering methods
You have solid engineering discipline and know how to use methods such as calculations, tolerance analysis, FE analysis, strength assessments, and design standards to make good design choices and reduce risk.
We value all three. In our environment, strong 3D problem-solving and communication are especially important because we work fast, iterate often, and solve tightly coupled design problems across disciplines.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
5+ years of experience developing mechanical or electro-mechanical products.
Strong 3D CAD skills (e.g. SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, NX or similar). We use Onshape.
Proven ability to work with dense, compact mechanical systems with demanding interfaces and outer-dimension constraints.
Experience taking products from prototype stage through iterative testing to stable, manufacturable design.
Good understanding of materials and manufacturing methods such as CNC machining, sheet metal, casting, injection moulding, sealing technologies, cable and connector integration, and assembly processes.
Experience with engineering documentation such as drawings, BOMs, assembly instructions, and tolerance considerations.
Experience with FE analysis and structural assessment under static loads and pressure is preferred, ideally including tools such as ANSYS Mechanical.
Good communication skills in English. Norwegian is a plus.
Experience that is especially relevant
Product development in harsh environments.
Electro-mechanical products, robotics, automation, optics integration, or precision assemblies.
Products produced in low-to-medium volume series (rather than one-off engineering projects).
Mechanical systems exposed to water, pressure, vibration, shock, transport loads, temperature variation, or other demanding conditions.
Supplier dialogue, production follow-up, sourcing variation, or quality problem-solving in scaled manufacturing.
What you’ll enjoy at Biosort
At Biosort, you will get real ownership in a small, highly competent team working on technology few companies in the world are building.
You can expect:
A highly skilled and engaged team, backed by long-term owners.
A central role in developing meaningful technology with direct environmental impact.
The opportunity to work on highly specialized underwater products combining mechanics, optics, electronics, and robotics.
A small-team environment where decisions are fast and your contribution is immediately visible.
Close proximity to testing, assembly, and product feedback — including access to our workshop, saltwater test pool, and real-world test sites.
Modern offices by the water at Fornebu, with canteen, café, gym, and grocery store in the building.
Competitive salary, stock options, and equipment of your choice.
A culture built on openness, initiative, ownership, and enjoying the work.
