There’s just something special about early-2000s Marvel books that took risks.
And Runaways absolutely did that.
Instead of focusing on established heroes, Brian K. Vaughan gave us a group of teenagers discovering their parents were actually supervillains… and then forced them to survive on their own.
That premise alone was genius.
But what really made this series stand out was how human the characters felt. The dialogue, the awkwardness, the friendships, the betrayals — it all felt real in a way a lot of superhero books at the time didn’t.
And honestly? Nico Minoru became one of Marvel’s coolest modern characters.
This Jo Chen cover also perfectly captures that darker, mysterious early Runaways vibe. Minimalistic, eerie and instantly recognizable.
Books like this remind me that not every important comic needs explosions and giant crossover events. Sometimes strong characters and smart writing are more than enough.
And finding a clean CGC 9.8 of this modern key is always a great feeling.
