Shared desirables
Mentorship and team development, raising the bar for those around you.
Ability to communicate complex probabilistic concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Recognised research contributions (e.g., publications, open source projects, invited talks).
Experience setting evaluation standards across multi-team organizations.
Background in industrial, energy, or similarly consequential domains.
Proficiency in Norwegian or other Scandinavian languages.
About the roles
We are seeking Senior AI and ML Scientists across several critical specialisations to bring scientific depth to our established AI organization. These roles are pivotal in raising evaluation rigor, mentoring across the team, and taking ownership of the specific modalities our industrial use cases demand.
You will apply scientific rigor across all stages of AI delivery, from initial problem framing through to evaluation design. This involves technical deep dives within your chosen specialization, contributing to our collective knowledge, and raising the bar across the team. A key aspect is mentoring data scientists and engineers, and actively moving research into production through collaboration with MLOps, architecture, and pod engineers. You will also contribute to establishing uncertainty quantification standards, understanding how prediction confidence and calibration affect safe automation thresholds, and promoting software engineering discipline in scientific work, including version-controlled experiments, peer-reviewed code, and production-ready implementations.
Why these roles exist
Aker BP is building the foundation for agentic AI at scale. We are doing this as one operating model — strategy, architecture, science, data, safety, and delivery designed to work together, not as separate teams. This role is part of that build.
These roles sit at the science and depth layer of the AI operating model — setting evaluation standards, mentoring across pods, and representing the AI function in architectural and strategic decisions.
We are moving AI into the core of industrial operations — work that spans physical assets, regulated environments, and decisions that affect production, safety, and the broader energy system. We work cross-disciplinarily, with a focus on shipping into production rather than running experiments indefinitely.
One role – several specialisations
Apply for different tracks.
We assess against a shared senior profile and match track based on strengths. Indicate a preferred track or stay open to placement.
Track 1: Principal AI / ML Scientist
Provide scientific leadership across the full team. Set the evaluation bar, mentor across specialisations, shape research direction, and represent the AI function in architectural and strategic decisions. A high-leverage senior hire.
Must-have
PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Statistics, or related field — or equivalent demonstrated depth.
Track record of moving research into production, not just publishing.
Demonstrated mentorship and leadership across a senior scientific team.
Deep working knowledge of uncertainty quantification, calibration, and out-of-distribution behaviour in autonomous AI.
Preferred
Recognised research contribution (publications, open source, invited talks).
Experience setting evaluation standards across a multi-team organisation.
Background in industrial, energy, or similarly consequential domains.
Track 2: Senior ML Engineer / Applied Scientist — Language and Agents
Bring deep expertise in LLM-based systems, agentic reasoning, RAG quality, evaluation frameworks for probabilistic outputs, and multi-agent coordination. Translate uncertainty in LLM outputs into concrete risk thresholds and operational guardrails.
Must-have
Hands-on production experience shipping ML or LLM-based applications, ideally including agentic patterns.
Demonstrated work on evaluation methodology for probabilistic and non-deterministic outputs.
Hands-on ML and AI architecture experience including evaluation of quality performance.
Preferred
Multi-agent coordination patterns (planner-executor, critic-actor, etc.).
MLOps framework with focus on automated performance checks and re-training.
Experience with calibrated uncertainty estimation in production.
Publications, open source, or recognised work in the field.
Track 3: Senior Signal Processing / Acoustic ML Engineer
Specialist depth in acoustic signal processing and related machine-learning approaches. Relevant across subsurface, operations, and equipment monitoring use cases.
Must-have
MSc or PhD in Signal Processing, Acoustics, Geophysics, or related field.
Hands-on machine-learning applied to acoustic or signal data.
Demonstrated production deployments — not just research projects.
Preferred
Subsurface, seismic, or geophysical applications.
Equipment monitoring or industrial IoT signal applications.
Track 4: Senior Computer Vision Engineer / Scientist
Specialist depth in computer vision for industrial applications: inspection imagery, equipment monitoring, drone-footage analysis, and multimodal retrieval.
Must-have
MSc or PhD in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, or related field.
Hands-on production CV models deployed in industrial or comparable contexts.
Working knowledge of multimodal retrieval and modern vision-language models.
Preferred
Drone-footage analysis or aerial imagery.
Inspection or equipment-monitoring applications.
Active learning and label-efficient methods (relevant given industrial label scarcity).

Om arbeidsgiveren
Our ambition is clear: to become the world’s first AI‑native exploration and production company.
We're hiring to accelerate our journey towards becoming the first AI-native E&P company.
We didn't discover AI last year. For a decade, we've been building the data foundation and interoperable ecosystem that now lets us scale AI across some of the most complex operations in our industry.
Our ambition is simple to state and hard to deliver: a 3x productivity improvement. Getting there demands more than incremental gains, it requires a fundamental redesign of how work gets done. You get there by redesigning how decisions are made, how work is planned, and how assets are run, with AI agents as native participants in the operating model. And that's why we're looking for ambitious, driven AI professionals who want to help rewrite how a large industrial company operates.
If that sounds like your kind of problem, we'd like to meet you.
Aker BP uses AI-assisted review as part of the recruitment process. AI is used to structure and summarise information – all decisions are made by people.
