Turn Your Passion for Bergen into Unforgettable Experiences – Become a Guide in 2027!
Love Bergen? ❤️ Become an Authorised Guide – BGS Guide Academy 2027
Turn your curiosity and passion for people into memorable experiences for visitors to Bergen and the fjords.
Bergen Guideservice invites enthusiastic people to join our BGS Guide Academy, running from January to late April 2027, and prepare for paid guiding assignments in the coming season.
No previous guiding experience is required. We are looking for people who enjoy meeting others, are eager to learn and want to bring Bergen’s stories to life.
THE COURSE – YOUR FIRST STEP
Through online learning, classroom sessions and practical training, you will explore and develop:
Bergen’s culture, society and main attractions.
Bryggen and its UNESCO World Heritage status.
The surrounding fjord region and key destinations.
Norwegian and Bergen history, traditions and contemporary life.
Storytelling, presentation techniques and public speaking.
Communication, hospitality and engaging with different audiences.
Improvisation and handling unexpected situations.
Group management, safety and professional tour delivery.
Walking tours, bus tours and guiding on rail journeys.
Itinerary planning, time management and transport coordination.
Responsible tourism and respect for local communities and cultural heritage.
The programme includes intensive guide-skills workshops, demonstration visits to museums and attractions, and supervised walking and bus tour practice. You will build your skills through practical exercises, constructive feedback and independent study.
The course prepares you to become an authorised Bergen guide, meeting our requirements and standards of Norges Guideforbund (NGF).
Full participation and independent study are required. To qualify, you must complete the course and pass the required examinations and practical assessments.
Successful candidates will have the opportunity to take on paid guiding assignments with Bergen Guideservice. The volume and type of assignments will depend on demand, language skills and availability. We offer competitive terms for guiding assignments.
WHAT COULD YOUR WORKDAY LOOK LIKE?
No two tours are the same. At Bergen Guideservice, we specialise in private, tailor-made experiences shaped around our guests’ interests, pace and wishes. From the historic lanes of Bryggen and panoramic views from Fløyen or Ulriken to local culinary discoveries and journeys through the fjords, our strength lies in creating experiences that feel personal, thoughtful and memorable.
Our work spans private walking tours, panoramic bus tours, shore excursions, fjord journeys and tour leading in Bergen and beyond, including Flåm and Hardanger. Our primary focus is the private travel market, where attention to detail and the ability to adapt each experience to the people in front of you are essential.
We also serve the high-end travel market, with exciting assignments involving private yachts, helicopter tours and exclusive itineraries. These guests often have high expectations, calling for discretion, flexibility and a confident, attentive approach to hospitality.
For our guides, this means a varied and rewarding role: meeting people from around the world, sharing the places they love and using their knowledge, personality and judgement to make every journey special.
Our busiest season runs from April to October, and we also need guides who are available throughout the year.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We would love to hear from you if you:
Speak English confidently and at least one additional language. We welcome all languages, with particular demand for German, French, Italian, Arabic, Spanish, Polish, Japanese and Chinese. Norwegian and other Scandinavian languages are also highly valued.
Enjoy meeting people and sharing stories.
Are curious, reliable, flexible and eager to learn.
Can commit time to the course and offer realistic availability for guiding assignments.
Feel at home with our values and want to help create welcoming, memorable experiences.
We welcome applicants of all ages and backgrounds, both local and international. Retirees and pensioners are warmly encouraged to apply. Your life experience, knowledge and enthusiasm can be valuable strengths in guiding.
