Provisional Edition (Foreløpig utgave)
This book is short and provisional. It is short because it aims to put on record a summary of the Roman coins from 140 sites and to give an illustration of how such lists may be of use. It is provisional because the "sites" are a highly unsatisfactory mixture of published accounts, first hand identifications, seasons of work from large sites, and partial lists from small sites. These problems will be mentioned in the site guide. In an appendix there are a few ideas which have cropped up during work on the material. The first edition (to follow) will try to do more with better material.
The sites are spread throughout England and Wales. The distribution is not uniform because the sites are not spread regularly across the landscape, and excavation and coin collection have not been practised uniformly.
I have tried to include lists with larger, rather than smaller, numbers of coins on the basis that totals of less than 100 coins make far too much numerical noise over the presence or absence of a single coin. Yet this introduces another bias for it may be that sites which have only small numbers of coin losses used coins in a different way and at different times from sites with larger coin loss. A few smaller sites have therefore been included.
The coins, as always for my purposes, are not art objects to be lovingly gloated over, but numbers in a table. The tables have been constructed by dividing the coins into the 21 chronological periods which now seem to have reached (almost) universal agreement.
Denne boken er kort og foreløpig. Den er kort fordi den har som mål å gi et sammendrag av romerske mynter fra 140 steder og å illustrere hvordan slike lister kan være nyttige.
Stedene er spredt over hele England og Wales.
