Amsterdam Archaeological Studies is a new series devoted to the study of past human societies in Europe from the prehistory up into modern times. primarily based on the study of archacological remains. The series will include excavation reports of modern fieldwork; studies of categories of material culture; and synthesising studies with an emphasis on creating broader images of past societies, thereby contributing to the theoretical and methodological debate in archaeology.
The Roman conquest of western Europe had many consequences for the local inhabitants; although the political and economical
circumstances have been investigated thoroughly, very little attention has been paid to effects on religious life. In this book for the first time a consistent picture is drawn of the religious represen tations and the ritual customs of the populations of northern Gaul. In a provocative style the author seeks to argue that traditional ideas and values may account for regional differences in the ways these groups dealt with Roman forms of religious culture. The combination of a new theoretical framework and a clear presentation of a large amount of empirical data make this book of great importance for all those interested in the process of Romanization and an indispensable work of reference for future studies on Gallo-Roman religion.
