Marie was born 3 November 1845 in Dresden, the daughter of Carl Ludwig Adolf Ehrhardt and Mathilda Carolina Brockhoff. She spent her formative years in Dresden.
On 1 August, 1867, Marie married John Grieg, a merchant and the brother of the composer Edvard Grieg. From this union came the following children: Signe, an actress and married to screenwriter Ludwig Muller; Agnes, Ebba; Marie, who married the historian Just Bing; Anna, the later wife of composer Johan Halvorsen; Alexandra who married Asbjørn Bjerke; Håkon; Eli; Mathilde; Ole Bull; and Ingo, who emigrated to the United States and died in Chicago.
At the time of the 1875 Norway Census, John was described as a merchant and home owner. Also living in the household were John's wife, Marie, and their children: Signe, Agnes, Ebba, Marie, Anna and Alexandra. The family had three servants living with them. John's brother, Edvard, working as a musician, and Edvard's wife, Nina, were also living with the family.
At the time of the 1885 Norway Census, John and his family were living at 2913 Strandgade Number 152. John was working as a merchant. Along with his wife, Marie, were his children: Agnes (born 1869); Håkon (1876); and Ole Bull Grieg (1883). Two servants, Berthe Hansen and Fredrikke Olsen, were also members of the household.
By the time of the 1891 Census, John was described as a merchant and bank bond holder. Also living in the household were his wife, Marie Grieg (born Ehrhardt and born 1845); and children: Alexandra (1875); Håkon (1877); Ole Bull (1883); and Ingo (1886). One servant was also living with the family, Bergithe Olsen. The family was living at 38 Strandgaden 152.
At the time of the 1900 Norway Census, John was living in the Fana Kommune at 96 Granhaugen. He was described as a bank bond holder and the English Consul. Also living with him were his wife, Marie, and his children Agnes, Alexandra, Ole Bull, and Fana. Alexandra was working as a kindergarten teacher, and Ole Bull Grieg was working as a bank clerk in Bergen. One servant was helping the family, Marie Samsonsen.
Sadly, John's death came on 10 October 1901 when he committed suicide. He was 61 years of age at his death. He was not given a funeral, but his remains were buried on 12 October.
Marie was listed in the 1910 Norway Census, living in Oslo at 29 Holtegaten 8. She was described as a widow living on a pension and investments. Her birth date and place were given as 3 November 1845 in Dresden, Sachsen. Living with her was a primary school teacher named Hanne Marie Krog, born 1885 in Drammen.
Marie died 10 June 1931 at the Johannes Sokn in Bergen at the age of 85. Her remains were interred on 13 June 1931.
