Classic German haute horlogerie with one of the most sophisticated alarm watches on the market.
The Senator Diary (Caliber 100-13) features one of the most advanced mechanical alarm complications ever made: a fully programmable alarm that triggers on a specific date and time (not just like a digital calendar reminder, but 100 % mechanical).
Key elements on the dial
• Big date at 3 o’clock → shows the current date
• Alarm date window at 10–11 o’clock → shows the date you have programmed the alarm for
• Alarm time aperture at 8 o’clock → small blue arrow points to the programmed alarm time (hours only, in 1-hour steps)
• Alarm power reserve / ON–OFF indicator at 9 o’clock → red dot = alarm is armed and has power
Setting the alarm (three separate crowns/pushers on the left side)
1. Set the alarm date Pull the crown at 10 o’clock → the hand in the alarm-date window advances. Push back when finished.
2. Set the alarm hour Pull the crown at 8 o’clock → the blue arrow in the aperture jumps forward in 1-hour steps. Push back when finished.
3. Arm the alarm and wind the alarm barrel Rectangular pusher at 8 o’clock (repeated pressing) winds the separate alarm mainspring and simultaneously switches the alarm from OFF → ON (red dot appears at 9 o’clock).
When the programmed date and time arrive
• The current big date matches the programmed alarm date AND
• The hour hand passes the programmed alarm hour
→ A cam system releases the alarm strike train.
A hammer strikes a gong (mounted inside the case) for up to ~60 seconds (very loud and clear for a mechanical alarm).
The alarm stops automatically after about one minute or if you press the rectangular pusher again.
Important notes
• The alarm has its own dedicated mainspring (separate from the going train), therefore winding the alarm does not affect the 55-hour power reserve of the watch itself.
• You can only program the alarm to ring once on a specific date and hour; it does not repeat daily.
• After the alarm has rung, the red dot disappears (alarm is OFF again) and you must re-wind and re-set it for the next appointment.
In short: it is a true mechanical “calendar alarm” that can wake you or remind you of an appointment on a precise day and hour — an extremely rare and complex complication that
