Save the Children has made bold and positive commitments to strengthen accountability to affected populations in humanitarian responses. We want to ensure that children's voices and rights guide our humanitarian work, that we deliver exceptional programming in line with international standards for accountability to affected populations and children, and that we continually learn and lead on good practice for accountability to children in humanitarian response. We have agreed to hold ourselves to the Core Humanitarian Standard and report against the commitments of the Grand Bargain.     We have high ambitions related to the change we are seeking and are looking for an experienced and motivated humanitarian professional to play an exciting role in taking this forward.     The Humanitarian Child Participation and Accountability Advisor will be deployed up to 50% of the time to support accountability and participation strategy, implementation and capacity strengthening in humanitarian responses worldwide. While not deployed, the post holder will support global learning and innovation around humanitarian accountability, capacity strengthening, development of tools and resources and remote support to responses.    Responsibilities and tasks:    While deployed to Save the Children humanitarian responses, the postholder will play a critical role in:
  • Ensuring child participation and accountability to children is fully incorporated into response strategies and program methodologies  
  • Supporting set up and improvement of systems for child engagement, including information sharing, complaints and feedback channels, and sector wide community and child engagement planning  
  • Leading or support child consultations across responses 
  • Collaborating with child safeguarding teams to ensure appropriate and accessible community-facing child safeguarding and prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA) processes are established  
  • Supporting capacity building on child engagement at field level with SC staff and partners through coaching, directly facilitating trainings, developing training material or contributing points on child participation to existing training methodologies
  While not deployed, the post holder will support Save the Children's global efforts around Child Engagement in humanitarian response through:
  • Participating in global coordination around child engagement and accountability to children in humanitarian response and contributing to global policies, standards and guidance 
  • Remotely supporting field-based colleagues in developing appropriate strategies for child engagement or advising on specific issues.  
  • Contributing to developing methodology for innovative approaches to child engagement 
  • Engaging in discussions with donors around accountability to affected children, developing applications for funding to support child accountability as well as discussions around prioritization of resources  
  Professional qualifications and experience 
  • Academic qualification in a related field  
  • Excellent knowledge of the field of AAP and current practice around engaging with children 
  • 3 years' response level work on engaging affected populations, ideally with a focus on children 
  • Significant experience in setting up accountability systems in responses, including complaints and feedback mechanisms and information sharing processes 
  • Experience conducting participatory assessments.   
  • Experience in strategy development
  • Experience in developing and conducting trainings 
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills and ability to develop complex arguments 
  • Fluency in English, both verbal and written 
  • Competency in French or Arabic an asset

  Other:    The position requires a willingness and availability to travel up to 50% of the year.    You will work among highly competent and engaged colleagues.
