Would you like to lead research that strengthens patient safety across Nordic countries?
NIOM Adverse Reaction Unit is looking for Clinical Senior Researcher or Head of Research
As the Adverse Reaction Unit at NIOM enters a new strategic phase with an increased focus on research and Nordic collaboration, we are seeking a senior clinical researcher to help build and strengthen research on adverse reactions related to dental biomaterials.
You will play a key role in establishing and developing a Nordic collaboration for the assessment and reporting of adverse reactions, and in strengthening research by creating collaborations on data quality and quantity across the Nordic countries. The position combines research and daily clinical patient assessment and registration of adverse reactions. You will act as a key driver and coordinator between clinical environments, NIOM's research groups and external Nordic partners.
We are looking for a motivated researcher with a PhD, a high publication rate, and research qualifications in odontology or medicine, ideally at professor or associate professor level, or a relevant medical specialization in dermatology, toxicology, allergology or orthopedics. You are a proactive and results-driven researcher with a strong record of achievement, with experience working in complex clinical settings and the ability to collect, analyse and document. Professional proficiency in English and fluency in a Scandinavian language is required.
This is primarily a senior clinical research and coordination role with a clear mandate to build research capacity and a Nordic network. For particularly well-qualified candidates, appointment as Head of Research with administrative leadership responsibility for the Adverse Reaction Unit in Bergen may be considered. The final scope of the position will be adapted to the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

Om arbeidsgiveren
The Adverse Reaction Unit (Bivirkningsgruppen) is a national clinical competence centre for the assessment and monitoring of adverse reactions related to dental biomaterials, based in Bergen. We evaluate referred patients, receive and follow up on adverse reaction reports from dental health services, engage in clinical research, and contribute to knowledge development and dissemination within this specialised and societally important field. From July 2025, the unit became part of the Nordic Institute of Dental Materials (NIOM), significantly strengthening professional collaboration and resource sharing.
The Nordic Institute of Dental Materials (NIOM) is an independent Nordic research institute working to ensure that dental biomaterials are safe and effective for the Nordic population. NIOM conducts research, participates in standardisation, and provides clinically relevant advice to dental services and health authorities across the Nordic countries. As a Nordic cooperative body in oral health, the institute aims to support safe and effective dental biomaterials in clinical practice. NIOM is jointly owned by NORCE and the Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care Services and collaborates closely with Nordic universities, research centers, and professional communities.
NIOM's multidisciplinary team comprises of 35 researchers, engineers, plus visiting scientists and research fellows, working across clinical odontology, material science, cell biology, microbiology and analytical chemistry. The institute engages in broad research collaboration that spans clinical and laboratory research, standardisation, and knowledge dissemination in the field of dental biomaterials.
The integration of the Adverse Reaction Unit into NIOM creates strong synergies and new opportunities for collaboration between clinical environments and research groups, provides enhanced access to interdisciplinary expertise and laboratories, and expands the scope for Nordic cooperation on biomaterial safety.
