Project Engineer - Maritime Autonomy

Zeabuz is a Norwegian maritime technology company delivering intelligent navigation, automation and autonomy solutions for commercial and defence operators, with a growing portfolio of real-world deployments across multiple vessel types and operating environments.

We are now looking for a Project Engineer to strengthen our autonomy software team as we enter our next phase of growth.

About the role

In this position, you will play a key role in transforming autonomy technology into operational systems deployed onboard customer vessels. You will work across the full delivery lifecycle, from engineering and procurement to system assembly, testing, commissioning and final validation. Your work will directly contribute to the successful deployment of autonomous vessel solutions in real-world environments. The role involves frequent national and international travel to support installations, commissioning, customer deployments and service activities for vessels in operation.

You will join a multidisciplinary team of engineers, software developers and maritime domain experts working to deliver autonomy systems for an expanding range of vessel applications. We believe you combine strong technical competence with a practical, hands-on approach to engineering, and enjoy taking ownership of projects from concept through deployment. You are structured, solution-oriented and comfortable working close to both hardware and software in demanding operational environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare technical documentation, drawings, schematics and installation documentation for customer projects.

  • Procure and manage project components, including computers, automation hardware, sensors and electrical systems.

  • Assemble and configure automation cabinets, sensor units and onboard system installations.

  • Configure and integrate hardware and software components within autonomous vessel systems.

  • Perform system verification, quality assurance and testing using our Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulation systems.

  • Prepare systems and equipment for shipment and customer delivery.

  • Travel to customer sites to participate in vessel commissioning, diagnose and resolve technical issues, testing, tuning and operational verification onboard customer vessels.

  • Collaborate closely with software, autonomy and product teams to ensure successful project execution.

Who we are looking for

  • Agile, flexible and comfortable working in a fast-moving environment where priorities can evolve as projects progress.

  • Practical and solution-oriented, with the ability to troubleshoot technical challenges and find effective solutions under real-world conditions.

  • Structured and detail-oriented, with a strong focus on quality, reliability and delivering projects to a high standard.

  • A strong communicator who enjoys collaborating across disciplines and working at the intersection of engineering, operations and customer-facing activities.

  • Comfortable taking ownership of tasks and driving them through to completion.

Required qualifications

  • BSc or higher education in Automation, Electrical Engineering, Marine Technology, Cybernetics or a related technical discipline.

  • 3+ years of relevant experience within maritime, automation or industrial systems.

  • Experience working with technical documentation, system testing, and electrical, automation or integration projects.

  • Strong practical and technical understanding of industrial systems and field installations.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

  • Vocational certificate (Fagbrev) within a relevant discipline is considered an advantage.

Relevant technology knowledge

  • Industrial communication protocols including CAN Bus, Modbus, Ethernet/TCP/IP, NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000

  • Serial communication interfaces such as RS232, RS422, RS432 and RS485

  • ROS2

  • Linux

  • Docker

  • Nvidia Orin, JetPack and Isaac ROS

  • Industrial networking and automation systems

  • CAD (mechanical and/or electrical)

What we provide

  • Work in a modern office located centrally in Trondheim, equipped with advanced simulators and access to autonomous vessels for real-world testing.

  • Close collaboration with experienced engineers and maritime specialists in a multidisciplinary team

  • Continuous opportunities for learning, professional growth and increased responsibility as both you and the company develop
