Selling my brand-new FriendlyElec CM3588 NAS Kit.
I bought it about a year ago with plans to build my own home NAS / homelab server, but never found the time to set it up. It has therefore seen essentially no use and is in brand-new condition.
The CM3588 is a powerful and compact ARM home server based on the Rockchip RK3588. It has an 8-core CPU, 8 GB RAM, built-in eMMC storage, 2.5GbE networking and, most importantly for a NAS, four M.2 NVMe SSD slots.
It’s an interesting alternative to a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, Beelink or entry-level Synology for someone who wants to build their own low-power NAS, home server or homelab.
Specifications:
• Rockchip RK3588 8-core ARM processor
• 8 GB LPDDR4X RAM
• 64 GB eMMC built-in storage
• 4× M.2 NVMe SSD slots (PCIe 3.0)
• 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet
• 6 TOPS AI/NPU accelerator
• Hardware 8K video decoding
• 2× USB 3.0
• USB-C
• 2× HDMI output + HDMI input
• microSD slot
• 40-pin GPIO
• Dedicated fan connector
It supports Linux distributions and server platforms including Debian, Ubuntu, OpenMediaVault, FriendlyWrt/OpenWrt, Alpine Linux and Proxmox VE.
Possible uses:
• DIY NAS / file server with up to four NVMe SSDs
• Docker / container server
• Kubernetes or K3s homelab
• Proxmox home server
• Home Assistant and other home automation
• Plex or Jellyfin media server
• Backup server / private cloud storage
• Pi-hole or AdGuard network server
• Self-hosted applications and services
• Local AI / ML / LLM experiments using the built-in NPU
• General Linux development or ARM server
Included:
• FriendlyElec CM3588 NAS Kit
• 8 GB RAM / 64 GB eMMC version
• 12V 4A universal power adapter
• Metal case
I bought the metal case separately specifically for the CM3588.
The only additional thing I would consider buying is the small CPU cooling fan if you’re planning to run sustained workloads.
A really interesting little machine for someone looking to build a compact NAS, homelab or self-hosted home server without the size and power consumption of a traditional server.
