Would you like to help us shape the acoustic sensor technology of the future?

Squarehead is looking for a developer to help us advance our world-leading acoustic systems, used for applications such as monitoring autonomous vessels.

Our technology currently protects both civilian and military installations in Norway and allied nations around the world. We’re a small team in the software department who solve interesting problems around our industrial products, primarily in the maritime sector. Now we're looking for a new teammate to join us!

What you’ll do

Our main product is an array of 100+ microphones, which, combined with some clever maths and signals processing, enables us to listen in a direction. This allows us to detect and locate faults in machinery.

The code that runs on the array is written in modern C++, where performance, clean code, safety, and collaboration really matter. The main responsibility of the code is to continuously sample the microphones, run the necessary DSP and machine learning algorithms, and turn this into detection information. This is then made available via network APIs to our frontend applications, together with audio and video streams.

To make all of this happen, we use tools like C++23, Rust, TypeScript, Tauri, React JS, clang-tidy, IDEs of your choice, git and GitLab. And the best tool of all; talking to each other and getting stuff done.

We have a small software team supporting our industrial efforts. This team is responsible for ensuring that our customers have all the software they need to effectively use our products. This includes embedded software running on the microphone array itself, as well as frontend applications and API integrations.

The role is based in Oslo, Norway, more specifically in Nydalen, but working from home every now and then is not a problem. Developer experience, as well as good written and oral communication skills in English, are required. Any knowledge in TypeScript, Rust, C++, grpc and realtime systems is a bonus.

If this sounds fun to you, and you have experience in some of what we have listed, send us an application describing how you can contribute. A bachelor’s degree or other relevant experience is an advantage when applying.

Working at Squarehead

Those of us who currently work here tend to appreciate:

  • The product is genuinely cool. Acoustic anomaly detection isn't something you find at most companies.

  • Small team, real impact. You work closely with developers and product managers with minimal overhead and maximum autonomy.

  • Lots of interesting problems to solve in areas such as media streaming, asynchronous programming, user interface design and making good products for our users.

  • We invest in developer experience by building our own tools to improve how we work.

  • Everything is built here. Software and hardware, developed locally in our Oslo office.

  • Occasional field trips to test systems in real-world conditions.

  • Good work/life balance with a flexible workday. Working from home when needed is not a problem.

Developers at Squarehead are also actively involved with organising the NDC TechTown conference and Oslo C++ Users Group, and visit and speak at conferences in Norway and abroad.

Other niceties:

In addition to the points mentioned above, we have:

  • Easy commute right next to the subway

  • Subsidised canteen

  • Weekly organized physical activity, chosen annually by employees (currently Padel and climbing)

  • Roof-top terrace for breaks and summer parties

  • Indoors bicycle and car parking

  • Wardrobe with showers

Practical

We review applications and invite candidates for interviews on an ongoing basis, so if you are interested in the position, we recommend that you apply quickly.

We work with partners who require confidentiality and have security requirements that we must ensure our employees can comply with. This position may require security clearance.

Om arbeidsgiveren

Squarehead Technology, who celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2024, is a global leader in directional microphone technology. The company was founded by three physics students at the University of Oslo who were intrigued by underwater sound waves. They came up with the idea of a microphone capable of separating intelligible sound from noise. Two decades later, Squarehead has grown into a team of 70 employees who develop, design, manufacture, and sell advanced microphone arrays.

Through the “digitalization of human hearing”, we enhance situational awareness in industrial and security sectors. Our solutions—ranging from drone detection and condition monitoring to quality control—play a vital role in safeguarding critical infrastructure and assets.

Squarehead is headquartered in central Nydalen, Oslo, with a subsidiary in the United States and sales representatives stationed across the globe. All development and production take place in Nydalen, fostering a dynamic and collaborative work environment. Being close to the final products means that challenges are solved together, across disciplines and expertise. At Squarehead, you witness the full impact of your work—from idea to implementation—and the difference it makes in the world.
