It is considered one of the highest, most successful models from the brand's "golden age of audio. It offers a sound similar in class to MC (Moving Coil) inserts, while maintaining the advantage of an easily replaceable needle.
Main features and technical specifications
The insert is characterized by a precise construction of cast alloy (which reduces resonance) and a paratoroid signal generator ensuring excellent channel separation.
Insole type: VM / MM (Dual Moving Magnet)
Needle cut: Elliptical miniature Nude diamond (whole diamond, without metal binder) measuring 0.2 x 0.7 miles
Cantilever: Conical aluminum tube (tapered aluminum)
Output voltage: approx. 4.0 mV
Frequency response: 10 Hz - 20,000 Hz
Channel separation: 30 dB (at 1 kHz)
Needle pressure (Tracking Force): 1.0 - 2.0 g (recommended standard: 1.5 g)
Weight of the insert: 8.5 g
Characteristics of sound
The AT-15Ea is famous for its very detailed, spatial and dynamic sound. Unlike the cheaper, older Audio-Technique models, the versions with the note "Ea" feature a smoother, velvety and less tiring bandwidth while maintaining a brilliant, controlled bass and palpable midrange. It works great for systems that sound a bit too dark or "dry" - this insert can breathe new life into them.
Needles and compatibility
The original needle dedicated to this body was ATN15Ea (burgundy/burgundy colour). Due to the passage of years, original stocks (NOS - New Old Stock) are scarce and expensive.
Alternatives: The AT-15 body also accepts needles from higher models, including. ATN15Sa (Shibata grinding) and ATN20/ATN20SS (top needles with berlyl bracket).
Replacements: Today, very good replacements (e.g. with Shibata or Hyper-elliptical cut) are produced by the Japanese company JICO.
The insert is highly valued by collectors, and if you have a fit body, it's definitely worth investing in a good-end needle, as it outclasses most of today's mid-range inserts.
In the audio industry, the Shibata cut is one of the most advanced shapes of the diamond blade of a phono needle.
How it works: The shape of the needle resembles an asymmetric cone with a large contact area with a vertically plate groove, but a very thin horizontal profile.
