UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) was founded on June 15, 1954, in Basel, Switzerland, marking its Golden Jubilee in 2004. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, UEFA hosted various events and released a two-volume official chronicle titled 50 Years of UEFA: 1954–2004
The landmark 50th-anniversary celebrations featured notable projects honoring the best in European footbal:
UEFA Golden Players: Each of UEFA's then-52 member associations selected their single most outstanding player from the 1954–2003 period. Notable selections included Bobby Moore (England), Alfredo Di Stéfano (Spain), Johan Cruyff (Netherlands), and Lev Yashin (Soviet Union).
UEFA Golden Jubilee Poll: Fans voted online from a shortlist of 250 players to determine the top European footballers of the past fifty years. Zinedine Zidane won the poll, narrowly finishing ahead of Franz Beckenbauer.
