Emerald is the Birthstone of May and is often chosen as an alternative to Diamond as an engagement ring stone because it promotes fidelity and happiness. Emerald is a symbol of rebirth, and it is believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune, and youth. Emerald is a variety of the mineral Beryl given the Green colour by trace amounts of Chromium or sometimes Vanadium. Emerald, derived from the word “smaragdus,” means, quite literally, “Green” in Greek. Zircon is a December Birthstone and is as old as time. Older than diamonds, holding zircon means holding a 4.4 billion year old piece of earth. Zircon is older than dinosaurs and almost as old as the earth itself!
