Assistant Director of Research
Norges Bank, Norway’s central bank, promotes economic stability and manages key responsibilities in monetary policy, financial markets, and financial stability. The Research Unit is recognized by the Research Council of Norway as an official research institute. The unit consists of 12 permanent research staff, plus research assistants and PhD interns, and collaborates extensively with external researchers. Our research contributes to strengthening the Bank’s reputation as a trusted institution.
We are now seeking a permanent Assistant Director of Research. This is a unique opportunity to combine academic excellence with strategic impact in an institution that plays a vital role in promoting economic stability in Norway. As Assistant Director, you will be expected to advance policy-relevant research, foster high standards in theoretical and empirical methods across the Bank, and support the further development of data and analytical infrastructure. In addition, you will serve as deputy and act on behalf of the Director of Research in the management group when required.
Key Responsibilities
You are expected to play a central role in shaping the research agenda and strengthening the links between research and policy advice. You will work closely with the Director of Research, support strategic initiatives and provide guidance within the unit, and serve as a substitute for the Director in the management group when needed. Alongside your leadership tasks, the position offers the opportunity to conduct your own research.
- Collaborate with and support the Director of Research on research strategy, academic activities, and the further development of the research unit.
- Serve as deputy and act on behalf of the Director of Research in the unit’s management group when required.
- Contribute to a collegial and inspiring research environment, and support the professional growth of research staff.
- Present policy-relevant research to both policymakers and academic audiences.
- Promote the development and effective use of the research unit’s analytical infrastructure and data resources.
- Conduct original research for publication in top peer-reviewed journals within macroeconomics, monetary policy, or financial stability.
Qualifications
- PhD in macroeconomics, monetary policy, financial stability, or a closely related field.
- Proven track record as a researcher, demonstrated by publications in recognized academic journals.
- Experience with academic project leadership, team facilitation, or supervisory roles is an advantage.
- Strong communication and presentation skills in English (the unit’s working language).
- Knowledge of a Scandinavian language is an advantage.
