“Now we arrived at the marsh that swirls with slime,
Where the proud wrathful and the sullen lie.
The sullen lie beneath the water, gurgling in the mire,
And the wrathful beat each other on the surface,
Swirling and tearing, foam on foam, in endless strife.”
“Look,” said my guide, “at those whom anger lifts above the swamp.
They strike and bite, and in their rage forget the world.”
Then we climbed aboard a little boat,
Piloted by Phlegyas, the fiery king of the Styx.
He rowed us swiftly through the blackened waters,
While the sullen muttered beneath the murky surface.
I shivered as the boat quivered in the black Styx,
And my heart beat faster as I approached the wrathful,
Whose cries and blows echoed across the marsh.”
