Navigating the Tunnel: Keratinocyte Dynamics & Therapeutic Targeting of IL-17 in Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Position summary
We seek a motivated postdoctoral researcher to join a multidisciplinary team investigating the dynamic mechanisms that drive Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS). The position focuses on functional characterization of dysregulated skin cells in HS to elucidate underlying processes of disease initiation. Combining spatial phenotyping of intact tissue, mechanistic studies on primary skin cells, and clinical observations, the project will investigate how keratinocyte phenotypes promote tunnel formation and how existing therapies modulate these dynamic processes.
The position is funded by Helse Sør-Øst.

Research Environment
Project leader: Emma Lång, Principal Investigator (PI) at the Department of Microbiology (OUH), is an expert in molecular and cell biology and advanced imaging techniques.
Emma Lång’s research group is co-located and integrated with Stig Ove Bøe’s research team, focusing on understanding mechanical and biochemical processes that mediate collective cell migration, tissue regeneration, and tumor invasion.

Key responsibilities

• Design, initiate, and execute advanced laboratory experiments, including spatial phenotyping and mechanistic studies on primary skin cells.
  
• Collaborate closely with clinicians and basic‑science teams at Oslo University Hospital (OUH) to integrate clinical insights with laboratory work.
  
• Analyze and interpret data, maintain accurate records, and contribute to manuscripts, reports, and grant applications.

Qualifications

• PhD in molecular/cell biology, cancer biology, computational biology, system biology, or a related field.
  
• Able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  
• Fluent in English, with strong written and oral communication skills.
  
• Research experience in pathology, cell biology, and/or molecular biology, preferably with hands‑on experience with human tissue and primary cells.
  
• Good practical laboratory skills.
  
  Desirable Qualifications
  
• A record of peer-reviewed international publications.
  
• Advanced cell‑culture experience, including primary human cell cultures and primary skin cell isolation.
  
• Practiced in tissue‑based assays such as multiplex immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence (IF).
  
• Familiar with histopathology and tissue processing: paraffin embedding/sectioning, and routine tissue staining.
  
• Experience with advanced microscopy technologies, including spatial and live imaging.
  
• Computational skills in quantification and statistical analysis of microscopy‑based data sets; familiarity with programming tools such as Python, R, and C++.
  
• Experience with bioinformatic data analyses.
  
• Basic knowledge of a Scandinavian language is a plus but not essential.

Why This Research Matters
This interdisciplinary study seeks to elucidate the cellular mechanisms underlying the chronic inflammatory skin disease Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS). HS is a debilitating condition that substantially reduces patients’ quality of life; current treatments are often inadequate, and late diagnosis further complicates care. While most research has focused on inflammatory drivers, the roles of keratinocyte dysfunction and invasive behavior in disease progression — especially tunnel formation — remain poorly understood. Tunnel formation signals the transition from mild to severe HS and, once established, the disease is frequently difficult to manage without major surgery. By functionally characterizing keratinocyte phenotypes, we aim to deepen our understanding of HS pathogenesis and identify therapeutic targets that could enable more targeted, personalized treatments and reduce the requirement for surgery.
