The Women
Written and directed by Diane English, creator of the celebrated television series Murphy Brown, The Women is a modern rethinking of the 1939 George Cukor classic of the same name. The Women follows the lives of a group of wealthy Manhattan women who bond together when their dearest friend learns of her husband's infidelity at the hands of a backstabbing shopgirl. Mary Haines (Ryan) is a clothing designer who seems to have it all - until her best friends Sylvie (Bening), an editor of a major fashion magazine, Edie (Messing) a mother of five and author Alex (Pinkett-Smith), unwittingly discover Mary's husband is having an affair with Crystal (Mendes), a gorgeous 'spritzer girl' at the Saks Fifth Avenue perfume counter. The women - including Mary's mother Catherine (Bergen) - take matters into their own hands...

A recent graduate is unable to land her dream job and is forced to move back to the San Fernando Valley, home of her oddball family. While having no luck finding a job and being slowly driven crazy by her family, the graduate has a brief fling with an older British neighbour--before realising that her platonic best friend, who is about to move to New York City to attend law school, is her true love.

Battle-of-the-sexes romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl as Abby Richter, a romantically-challenged TV producer whose fruitless search for Mr Perfect has left her terminally single. When she becomes reluctantly embroiled in a series of outrageous tests devised by chauvinistic correspondent Mike (Gerard Butler) to prove his theories on relationships and supposedly help her in her quest for love, she is taken aback by the dramatic - and unexpected - results.
Going the Distance
Drew Barrymore and Justin Long (He's Just Not That Into You) reunite as a couple trying to maintain a long-distance relationship -- against all odds -- in this romantic comedy from the producers of Hairspray and 17 Again. Playing a couple who are good together -- even when they're apart -- one is an assistant at a Manhattan-based record company, the other's an aspiring journalist heading back to Berkeley to finish school. With a webcam connection and frequent flier miles, the two gamely navigate the pitfalls and miscommunications of their bicoastal romance, dodging bad advice from friends and some predatory singles who won't take "taken" for an answer. But when it seems their wait to be together is almost over, she scores her dream job in California just as his career heats up in New York. The big breaks they've been hoping for could break them up for good...unless their love can truly go the distance.
Going the Distance sparkles with wit and true romance--something of a rarity among mass-market romantic comedies. Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, who have been a couple in real life, use their personal chemistry to effective ends in the film. They play Erin and Garrett, geography-crossed lovers who, after a whirlwind romance of six weeks in New York ("Keep it light! Keep it light" they both say, futilely), try to see if they can keep the love fires burning when Erin must move to the West Coast. There are predictable pitfalls and speed bumps that populate any romantic comedy, as well as a sublime supporting cast of friends and siblings. Especially notable is Christina Applegate as Erin's sister, Corinne, jaded and hilarious, and fiercely protective of her sister. But the charm of Going the Distance is in the winsomeness of its main stars. Barrymore and Long seem to be acting effortlessly, and their enjoyment of each other's company lets the audience feel a part of the romance. First-time screenwriter Geoff LaTulippe is less focused on zingers that are hard to believe as dialogue, and more on the subtle ways people get to know each other, and enjoy each other--especially with humor. Director Nanette Burstein (documentaries including American Teen and The Kid Stays in the Picture) keeps the action moving deftly and lets the two stars shine--even as they long for one another across the miles. Erin and Garrett's stab at phone sex is laugh-out-loud funny, yet their tender, tentative connection feels real and warm. Going the Distance lets its likable stars cross the finish line, and bring the audience along with them. --A.T. Hurley
