This is a carved wooden statue of Guanyin, the Chinese bodhisattva of compassion, shown
holding a vase (symbol of the nectar of wisdom) and gesturing in a mudra (gesture of blessing or
reassurance). The figure wears an elaborate headdress featuring a smaller seated Buddha — an
iconographic hallmark of Guanyin imagery that references Avalokiteshvara’s spiritual origin.
The carving is expressive but stylized, and the layers of red, green, black, and gold paint have
developed visible age-related patina and loss. This wear appears natural, not artificially
distressed. The form and facial stylization suggest a folk devotional carving, not an imperial or
temple-grade sculpture.
Possible Origin and Age:
• Likely made in China or Southeast Asia (possibly Vietnam or southern China)
• Estimated age: Early to mid-20th century
