Associate Professorship, English for Academic Purposes (EAP)English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is a relatively new field in Norway. Oslo and AkershusUniversity College of Applied Sciences (HiOA) is extending its current EAP capability with one associate professorship.

The EAP unit is organized within HiOA’s Learning Centre and Library.  Our main role is to support the current institutional strategy of promoting, enabling and expanding the international research activity of its staff, as well as functioning as a unit of expertise in multilingual teaching and learning in higher education.  Additionally, we are responsible for carrying out research related to our activities.   The EAP unit is currently involved in developing a Unit for Academic Language and Practice in collaboration with HiOA’s Learning Support Unit and the Diversity in Pedagogical Practices Unit. 

Tasks and responsibilities

The new staff member will have responsibility for developing the EAP teaching and research portfolio in the fields of written and/or spoken academic English. We are particularly interested in candidates with a background in English for Research Purposes and/or English for Teaching Purposes. We also expect the new staff member to be interested in carrying out research related to the use of English in in higher education and research in Norway and/or internationally.

Tasks include:

  • teaching faculty and teaching at doctoral, postgraduate, MA and some undergraduate levels in topics related to written and oral communication in English in academic contexts
  • developing and holding workshops and seminars for academic staff in our own and other institutions of higher education
  • contributing to the development of the unit’s portfolio within CLIL and EMI
  • carrying out research related to the use of English in higher education and research in Norway and internationally
  • contributing actively to the development of the Unit for Academic Language and Practice

Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • PhD in linguistics, applied linguistics, rhetoric and composition, education or a similar EAP-related subject
  • Advanced EAP teaching expertise in higher education and research settings
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills and a willingness to learn Norwegian if not a speaker of a Scandinavian language

Applicants should have:

  • Expertise and experience in working with faculty and students from varied linguistic, cultural, educational and professional backgrounds
  • EAP teaching experience across a range of disciplines
  • Experience in project management and strategic development
  • Flexibility, excellent collaborative skills and the ability to communicate across disciplines
  • An interest in digital teaching and learning in higher education and innovative curriculum development
  • The ability to work independently and to be self-driven
  • Cultural curiosity and sensitivity

General criteria for appointment of a position as associate professor are stipulated in Section 1-2 of the Regulations relating to Appointment and Promotion to Teaching and Research Positions (Forskrift om ansettelse og opprykk i undervisnings- og forskerstillinger). See details in Norwegian as well as the guide to academic appointments in Norway.

Candidates who have no relevant qualifications in pedagogy at the time of appointment must commit themselves to complete a relevant course of study for teaching at university-level, such as HiOA’s programme for basic pedagogical competence (15 ECTS credits) within two years.

In addition to interview, a trial teaching session will be a part of the application process.

Remuneration

Salary is set in accordance with the Norwegian State Salary Scale, 1011 Associate professor, wage scale equivalent to 57 – 70 (NOK 482 800 – 613 500). Higher salary may be considered for specially qualified candidates. We make use of an electronic recruitment system.
