Munch Museum
Four years prior to Edvard Munch’s death in 1944, he bequeathed all his own works in his possession to the City of Oslo. Munch was already involved in discussions about a future museum while he still lived, but it was not until 1963, one hundred years after his birth, that the museum opened in a very contemporary building. From a 1950s building in Tøyen to a modern museum by Oslo’s waterfront: MUNCH opened 22 October 2021, tailor-made for great art experiences. The unique legacy of Edvard Munch finally has the place it deserves.
National Gallery
The National Museum’s mandate is to develop, conserve, research, make available and promote public knowledge about Norway’s biggest collection of art, architecture and design.
Vigeland Park
The sculpture park is Gustav Vigeland's life's work, and consists of over 200 sculptures in granite, bronze and wrought iron. It was built mainly in the period 1940-1949, but is the result of over 40 years of work. The start of the park is Vigeland's Fountain , which was originally to stand on Eidsvoll Plass in front of the Storting. These plans were never realized, and the fountain later became part of Vigeland's park plans. In 1924, the city council decided that the sculptor was allowed to build the Fountain in Frognerparken. At that time, the project had been expanded to include the Monolith and a sculptural bridge.
