Fra Weitze sin nettside;
The SS-Degen für Unterführer (SS NCO Sword) presented here represents a significant artifact from the material culture of the National Socialist apparatus. As regulation dress equipment for SS non-commissioned officers, this piece unites military tradition with the ideological self-presentation of the Schutzstaffel. This particular example, manufactured by the firm of Pet. Dan. Krebs in Solingen circa 1938, bearing Gahr acceptance stamps, survives complete with the rare Unterführer portepee (sword knot) and leather hanger with shoulder strap.
Origins and Design
The SS-Degen was first introduced in 1935 as part of the SS uniform and ceremonial equipment system. Its design was the work of Professor Karl Diebitsch, Heinrich Himmler’s personal advisor on art and design within the SS. From 1936 onwards, the SS-Degen became the standard sidearm for SS servicemen from the rank of Unterführer upward, replacing the earlier SS sabres that had previously been in use. This transition represented a deliberate move away from older military convention toward a distinctly SS aesthetic identity.
The Manufacturer: Peter Daniel Krebs
The firm of Peter Daniel Krebs of Solingen, founded in 1850 and registered in 1899, was among the original manufacturers of the SS-Degen. Solingen, world-renowned as the center of the German cutlery and edged weapons industry, was the natural production location for such high-quality bladed weapons. Around 1939, the firm received the RZM code M7/92. In addition to Pet. Dan. Krebs, other manufacturers participated in production, including Paul Müller at Dachau and Puma of Solingen.
Physical Characteristics of the NCO Version
The SS-Degen für Unterführer is a straight dress sword (Degen) with a D-shaped knuckle-bow (fingerguard) and a single-edged blade with fuller. The hilt fittings are nickel-plated steel, while the grip is fashioned from black lacquered, ribbed wood. The scabbard is constructed of black-painted steel with nickel-plated mounts. The total length of the described example is 1000 mm.
The NCO version is distinguished from the officer variant—the SS-Ehrendegen—by several key features. The SS runes appear on the pommel cap rather than as an inset disc on the grip as with the officer version. The grip lacks the silver wire wrapping found on officer swords, and the scabbard chape is plain and unadorned, in contrast to the decorative silvered chape of the officer version. The Gahr acceptance stamps found on the underside of the crossguard and the scabbard throat (locket) represent the SS-Kulturzeichen, confirming approval by the SS Culture office. Otto Gahr died by the start of the Second World War, after which the marking system was changed.
