Limited run of 600 guitars worldwide. (Only Flaw on Guitar is a cracked pickguard, easily replaceable...) Rare Guitar....The Gibson Midtown Kalamazoo , primarily released as a limited run around 2013-2014, is one of the most fascinating "hybrid" guitars Gibson has produced in the modern era. While the standard "Midtown" series was designed to be a utilitarian bridge between a solid-body Les Paul and a semi-hollow ES-335, the Midtown Kalamazoo was designed to be a high-class tribute to the legendary Gibson Byrdland . It takes the construction of a modern rock guitar and dresses it in the tuxedo aesthetics of a 1950s jazz box. Here is an overview of this unique instrument. 1. The Core Concept: "Midtown" Construction To understand this guitar, you have to understand the Midtown platform. Unlike an ES-335, which is made of bent laminate (plywood) sides with a center block, the Midtown starts as a solid block of Mahogany . The Process: Gibson routes out the sides of the solid mahogany block to create air chambers, leaving a solid center intact. The Top: A flat (not arched) Maple top is glued onto the routed body. The Result: A guitar that is more resistant to feedback than an ES-335 and has a tighter, punchier attack (closer to a Les Paul), but with the "air" and resonance of a semi-hollow. 2. The "Byrdland" Connection (Key Specs) The "Kalamazoo" part of the name refers to the golden era of Gibson manufacturing, specifically the high-end jazz archtops like the Byrdland and L-5. This model borrows three crucial specs from the Byrdland: Short Scale Length (23.5"): This is the most defining and polarizing feature of the guitar. The standard Gibson scale is 24.75". The Midtown Kalamazoo uses a 23.5-inch scale . Effect: The string tension is significantly lower. This makes complex jazz chords (spanning 4 or 5 frets) much easier to reach, and string bending is effortless. However, it can feel "crowded" on the higher frets for players with large hands. The Neck Profile: Consistent with the short scale, the neck is a slim, fast profile, distinct from the chunky '50s necks found on other Gibsons. Trapeze Tailpiece: Instead of a Stop Bar, it uses a decorative Trapeze tailpiece. This changes the break angle over the bridge and adds a subtle "acoustic" reverb quality to the sustain. 3. Electronics: '57 Classics To match the vintage vibe, the guitar is equipped with Gibson '57 Classic humbuckers (Gold covers) in both the neck and bridge positions. Tone: These are low-to-medium output PAF-style pickups. They are warm, clear, and articulate. Versatility: Because the body is a routed solid block (rather than a full hollow body), these pickups can handle high-gain distortion much better than a real Byrdland, making this guitar capable of hard rock despite its jazz appearance. 4. Aesthetics: The "Tuxedo" Look The Midtown Kalamazoo was sold as a premium model, and the cosmetics reflect that: Hardware: Full Gold hardware. Binding: Multi-ply binding on the body and headstock (a high-end "Custom" feature). Headstock: Features the "split diamond" or oversized inlay style often associated with the Byrdland/Super 400 aesthetic. Inlays: Block inlays on the fretboard. Knobs: Tortoise-shell style speed knobs (on some finishes) or Black speed knobs. 5. Why it is Collectible The 2013/2014 Midtown Kalamazoo has developed a cult following for two reasons: Ergonomics: It is one of the few high-quality electric guitars available with a 23.5" short scale . For players with smaller hands or those who struggle with wide chord voicings, this guitar is a "secret weapon." Value: A real Gibson Byrdland costs thousands of dollars (often $8,000+). The Midtown Kalamazoo offered the visual swagger and the short-scale playability of a Byrdland at a working musician's price point, on a body that is durable enough for touring. Summary: It is a "Jazz guitar for Rock players" or a "Rock guitar for Jazz players." It offers the fast, slinky feel of a short-scale archtop with the feedback resistance and sustain of a solid body.
