In a world of grit, oil, dust, and mud, the scars of war weep bitter bile. Legends of warrior-mages still echo through taverns and throne rooms as a different breed of soldier is trained in the use of the deadliest weapons ever forged: pistol, rifle, and cannon.
On the island of Krace, amid skyscrapers thrusting upward from the shoulders of the ancient culhainne forest, a king is dying, and with him his dream for lasting peace. For in a world filled with restless dead and creatures best forgotten, the most heinous atrocities are committed not by demons or devils, but by members of the Dreaming Races themselves.
Lost in a sea of ignorance, bigotry, and greed, the light is waning for the Children of the Sun, but a few have the ability to rise above the masses. Attuned to the Aether, when the need is greatest they may draw upon it to make their bodies stronger and more dexterous, shield them from harmful magic, or make their voices felt in the very souls of those around them. Aided by sorcery, the art of war, and the principles of arcane science, they can change the course of history.
