EDITORIAL PREFACE
This is the second book of the multi-volume publication on the subject of Multilingualism and History of Knowledge, which appears in the Sitzungs-berichte der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. This collection of papers, too, concerns cross-cultural relations in Central Asia-like vol. 1, dedicated to the Iranian peoples of Central Asia and their contacts with various cultural (linguistic, literary, and religious) traditions of Buddhist character from India and the mediaeval Far East.
Further two volumes, dedicated to questions of Multilingualism and linguae francae in Iran, the Ancient Near East, South Asia and beyond and containing material from project meetings of the Multilingualism Research Group in Vienna and Athens, are prepared for press by the undersigned Editors at present and are expected to appear in the course of the next two years.
For more details concerning the international research forum, as well as for an account for the conferences and workshops held on its initiative at Vienna, Berlin, Athens, Sofia, Taipei, and Munich, and the plan of the publication Mul-tilingualism and History of Knowledge, the reader may refer to the Editorial Introduction to its Volume I.
Once again, we would like to thank to all conveners and participants of the project meetings of the Multilingualism Research Group, whose research re-sults are being introduced to the scholarly community in the present volumes, as well as the Academy Member Prof. Rüdiger SCHMITT for proposing these volumes for print to the Philosophisch-historische Klasse of the Austrian Academy
Dette er den andre boken om emnet flerspråklighet og kunnskapshistorie. Den er utgitt i Sitzungs-berichte der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Denne samlingen av artikler omhandler også tverrkulturelle relasjoner i Sentral-Asia - i likhet med bind 1, dedikert til de iranske folkene i Sentral-Asia og deres kontakter med ulike kulturelle (språklige, litterære og religiøse) tradisjoner av buddhistisk karakter fra India og middelalderens Fjerne Østen.

Artiklene som er inkludert her, tar for seg problemer innen tokharisk grammatikk som er av direkte relevans for rekonstruksjonen av protoindoeuropeisk, og for å bestemme tokharisks plass blant de indoeuropeiske språkene. De demonstrerer viktigheten av tokharisk for noen av de mest diskuterte problemene innen moderne indoeuropeisk språkvitenskap, som forhistorien til det kollektive og det feminine, nominalavledning og ablaut, eller rekonstruksjonen av verbalsystemet.
