The OCTALAMPTOP features what is perhaps the most finicky but (in my opinion) the best sounding octal tube: the 6SJ7. The 6SJ7 is a tube that I have included in my Filmosound 179 builds, inspired by the preamp in the 1950s Gibson GA-20 amps. A forerunner to the 9-pin 5879 pentode that’s found in the Filmosound 385 and Gibson GA-40 amps. As with the PRE85 & PREF86, putting these pentodes in a standalone preamp has mitigated the usual issues with microphonics and noise. The tubes that I use in these builds are hand selected by me for minimal microphonics, and when combined with a well-regulated power supply, they really sound fantastic. The 6SJ7 does what any good pentode can do - captures the full spectrum of your playing, all the details of your fingers/pick attack, as well as low end thump. The 6SJ7 in particular though is very resonant due to it being prone to microphonics. So, lots of good high end detail, and in some cases can make your solidbody guitar sound almost chambered or semi-hollow.
