About the positions

At the Department of Education (IPED) there are vacancies for two permanent positions, as Professor (position code 1013) or Associate Professor (position code 1011). The teaching part of the positions is affiliated with LINK - Centre for Learning, Innovation and Academic Development.

The Department of Education at University of Oslo (UiO) is a department at the Faculty of Educational Sciences. The department is a research institution in national and international educational science research. The department’s academic interests range from learning and development through the organizational, political, and institutional aspects of education, to communication, learning and design in a digital environment. The department has appx 100 employees and 900 students, including nine academic staff members of IPED whose teaching is with LINK. Most academic staff in IPED are affiliated with a research group.

One of LINKs’ most important tasks is to strengthen the quality of the education at UiO by offering courses in university pedagogy for temporary and permanent academic staff, and by helping to further develop the academic staff's understanding of and competence in pedagogy in higher education. LINK offers courses, workshops, and consulting activities for teachers and educational leaders at UiO. Through its courses, workshops, and consultations, LINK offers research-based suggestions and advice to academics and leaders, on topics including planning of teaching activities, learning, design of digital solutions, teaching and assessment work, leadership of and development of study programs and research supervision. In order to contribute to the quality of higher education at UiO, one of LINK’s goals is to invest in the development of pedagogical uses of digital media to stimulate teaching and learning. We are also starting to build capacity in sustainability education and strengthen our portfolio on inclusiveness perspectives.

Candidates for the positions are expected to develop a research agenda related to teaching and learning in higher education, and of relevance for the needs of IPED and LINK.


Job description
  • Actively participate in planning and development of university pedagogical work at UiO
  • Teach university pedagogical courses for academic staff and managers at UiO
  • Advise academic staff and leaders at UiO on issues related to university pedagogy
  • Actively design research projects, apply for research funding in relevant topics, and participate in research group activities
  • Actively contribute to the dissemination of university pedagogical knowledge in dialogue with employees and students at UiO
  • Supervise master's and PhD students
  • Perform administrative tasks

The positions involve 47 % teaching, 47 % research, and 6 % administrative tasks.


Qualification requirements

For Associate Professor:

  • Doctoral degree or equivalent qualifications within university pedagogy/higher education is preferred. Applicants with a doctoral degree within subject didactics or other relevant topics may also be relevant
  • Documented basic university pedagogical competence
  • Experience with academic development work and research competencies related to the subject areas described above
  • Knowledge about the Norwegian higher education system in general is an advantage, as well as being able to demonstrate an understanding of the importance and challenges of university education in a national and international context
  • Experience with inter-disciplinary work and collaboration, substantial inter-disciplinary understanding, and mastery of inter-disciplinary communication
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position will be emphasized
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral, in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language and English are a prerequisite for performing all the tasks associated with the position

Additional requirements for Professor:

  • Substantial academic production in excess of that which is required for a doctoral degree within a relevant subject area
  • Prolonged research activity with an independent research profile
  • The applicant’s research must be of high quality, show academic breadth and depth, and reflect both an independent research profile and the ability to address new issues
  • Broad experience in the development and implementation of teaching, supervision and work with educational quality
  • Good qualifications in the field of academic management and administration

In the ranking of competent applicants, the whole range of qualifications will be considered, including the applicant’s personal suitability and ability to communicate.
Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant’s experience and ability to attract research funding from external sources.


We offer
  • Salary NOK 692 400 - 796 600 per annum depending on competencies, in a postion as a Associate Professor (position code 1011)
  • Salary NOK 796 600 - 966 300 per annum depending on competencies in a postion as a Professor (position code 1013)
