About the job
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.
The position is anchored at NTNU in Ålesund and is part of the multi-partner SFI Harvest project – Technologies for sustainable biomarine value creation. We are looking for candidates with a background or experience within at least one of the following areas: Business strategy, sustainability / environmental management, sustainable supply/value chain management, management rules for the fisheries, marketing mechanisms for fish food products. You will report to the Head of Department.
Sustainability within the value chains in biomarine sector becomes and increasingly overall requirement for production of sustainable fish products.
The main purpose of the PhD is to build a prospective and comprehensive business model for sustainability for the development of sustainable feed production.
About the SFI Harvest
SFI Harvest brings together pioneering shipowners, key technology providers, large producers of raw materials and feed for the aquaculture sector, stakeholders, SINTEF Ocean, and other strong research groups, including AMOS (the Norwegian Centre of Excellence for Autonomous Marine Operations and Systems). The innovations will enable precise and efficient capture and processing of mesopelagic species, zooplankton, and phytoplankton.
Duties of the position
- The PhD candidate is expected to contribute to review, design, analysis and testing of business models for sustainability (BMfS) in cooperation with project partners.
- He/she is expected to complete the necessary doctoral coursework.
- Take part in case study research of companies in the fish farming industry.
- Conduct research, publish, and write publishable papers that constitute the requirement for the PhD position.
- Participation in activities organized by SFI Harvest partners.
- Working closely with researchers across project work packages.
Research activities will revolve around:
- Reviewing fisheries capture business models and value chains which correspond to sustainable governance and management.
- Working with partners to assess the applicability of existing sustainability assessment tools.
- Developing a decision-making framework to support the sustainability in business models.
- Testing the decision-making framework with key stakeholders from SFI Harvest.
Required selection criteria
- Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.

- Excellent written and oral English language
The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant
Preferred selection criteria
- Good knowledge of the fish feed and the aquaculture industry
- Understanding of how the Aquaculture sector and the life cycle of the feed affects the environment and the society
- Good theoretical and analytical skills
- Good communications skills
- Have experience of interviewing focus groups and running stakeholder workshops
- Norwegian or other Scandinavian language skills
Personal characteristics
- Ability to solve complex technical tasks independently.
- Ability to collaborate both within the discipline and across other discipline.
- You must be independent, have great work capacity and have enthusiasm for research.
- The ability to contribute to a good PhD environment and work environment in general is emphasized.
- The ability to carry out projects will be given special weight.
Emphasis will be placed on personal and interpersonal qualities.

Salary and conditions
As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 yearswith the possibility of an additional year of working duties.
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Economics and Management within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
The position is subject to external funding.
Primary residency in Ålesund is a prerequisite. The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at, and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

We will take joint work into account. If it is difficult to identify your efforts in the joint work, you must enclose a short description of your participation.
