About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The position is a PhD Candidate position and will be in the Organic chemistry group (https://www.ntnu.edu/chemistry/research/organic) at the Department of Chemistry at NTNU with a duration of 3 years with a possible extension of 1 year for teaching.

As part of the NRC IPN grant “FramSki – The future of responsible skiing” (FramSki), we have a vacancy for a 3-year PhD position at the Department of Chemistry within the Organic chemistry group. The transition to fluorine-free ski waxes in competitive and recreational skiing demands innovative solutions for reducing ski-snow friction. In the FramSki project, we tackle friction at the macro, micro and nano level in an interdisciplinary research project in collaboration with leading industry partners.

This specific PhD project focuses on the covalent modification of the ski base material. C-H activation through nitrene chemistry is envisioned as a starting point, but other approaches may be considered. The FramSki project also involves research on ski design and surface structuring and friction testing methodology. You will be part of an innovative and cross-disciplinary team and you will learn a lot about ski technology and innovation.

A fourth year may be considered that may consist of teaching, supervision duties, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.

Your supervisor is Associate professor Audun Formo Buene.


Duties of the position
  • Plan, execute and document the synthesis of organic molecules for covalent functionalization of ski bases
  • Develop methodology for ski base functionalization
  • Participate in the friction testing on full-scale skis in friction laboratory.
  • Participate in the supervision of Master students and the day-to-day running of the laboratory.
  • Write academic papers and submit them to international scientific journals.

Required selection criteria
  • You must have a professionally relevant background in organic chemistry.
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level.
  • A master’s degree within experimental organic chemistry.
  • A strong academic record with a weighted average grade of master’s or equivalent education with a grade of B or higher, in accordance with NTNU’s grading system.
  • Current master's students in the last semester of their master studies can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the Faculty of natural sciences' doctoral program (https://www.ntnu.edu/nv/phd)
  • Proficiency in oral and written English. In the case of equal qualifications, applicants with a Scandinavian language might be preferred due to teaching duties.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years with a possible extension of 1 year for teaching duties.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Chemistry (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phkj) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
