About the position

Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MTP) has broad interdisciplinary expertise in the fields of logistics, machine design, product development, robotics and automation, materials science and engineering, production management and risk and reliability of complex systems.

The research focuses on development, optimization and improvement of industrial processes, materials and production systems. The vision of NTNU is to create knowledge for a better world, and the main research areas are Health, Oceans, Energy and Sustainability to which MTP is also actively contributing.

The research activities is at high international level of knowledge and value creation contribute to solve important societal and industrial challenges. Experimental and modeling research, education and practice are vital parts of the department's strategy.

MTP has virtual laboratories and advanced physical laboratories for mechanical and industrial engineering, and the Logistics 4.0 Lab represents one of the most vivid examples. MTP also owns, and has access to, IT infrastructure both at local, national and EU levels. The department offers studies such as 3-years Bachelor program, 2- and 5-years Master programs, 2-years International Master programs, and experience-based Master programs and PhD programs.

This position is a 100% permanent position, and you are expected to develop your research in line within the Production Management research group at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at NTNU. Outstanding candidates in the area of industrial engineering, production and operations management, supply chain management, with emphasis on human-centric, resilient and sustainable manufacturing and logistics, are encouraged to apply. In particular, the Department is looking for you who can ensure interdisciplinary approaches, combining knowledges also from different fields of engineering and management, in traditional and emerging sectors. You will adopt a holistic perspective when advancing the research field, combining industrial engineering and operations management approaches with other ones, such as approaches typical of decision science, computer science, social science, natural science.

You will work within the Production Management research group with an office at Campus Gløshaugen.

Your immediate leader is Head of Department.


Duties of the position
  • international level research in the scientific area of the candidate's field, resulting in publications in internationally top ranked journals in her/his field
  • initiate new research projects through active interaction with industry and the funding bodies (e.g. EU and The Norwegian Research council)
  • initiate, participate in, and manage externally and internally funded research projects
  • contributing to, fronting and leading the development of the research area within the candidate's field of research
  • teaching at bachelor, master and PhD levels in all the study programs taught in the department
  • supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students and provide mentorship to Postdocs and researchers
  • contribute to the development and the activities of the Logistics4.0 Lab
  • exam preparation and evaluation
  • administrative tasks as required

Required qualifications 

You must have the qualifications required for the position of Associate Professor in the field of Advanced Manufacturing operations Management, as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts 

  • your scientific experience must be in the field of industrial engineering, production and operations management, supply chain management, with emphasis on human-centric, resilient and sustainable manufacturing and logistics
  • you need the capability to carry out interdisciplinary research, in traditional and emerging sectors, with mix-methods (qualitative and quantitative) approaches
  • you must have experience of applying qualitative methodologies, in particular case research, action research, conceptual modelling in manufacturing operations management
  • you must have experience of applying quantitative methodologies, in particular analytical modelling and data-driven (AI-based) modelling, and knowledge in programming and simulation tools for manufacturing operations management
  • you must have publications in highly ranked journals in your field. Scientific articles published in the last five years (excluding career breaks) with relevance for the research areas mentioned above and where interdisciplinary approaches are used will weigh strongest in the evaluation and ranking. The scientific publication record will be evaluated in light of the length of the applicant's academic career taking into account the research field
  • you must have documented experience as researcher/post-doc or equivalent
  • you must have documented experience at least in preparing research funding applications (national or international) and you must show ability to define proper attractive research
  • you must have documented experience in teaching, supervising master students, and assisting the supervision of PhD students and you must show ability to define innovative teaching activities
  • you need excellent oral and written English language skills

 

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions

As a Associate Professor (code 1011 ) you are normally paid from gross NOK 600 000 – NOK 900 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.  

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

  • a description (3-5 pages) on how you envision your research in a Norwegian context and what would be the main sources of funding
  • a description (maximum 2 pages) on how you envision your teaching activities in a Norwegian context

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration, and an open scientific practice will be recognized.

NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Fransisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA and The obligations in the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment ( CoARA) on responsible assessment of research and recognition of a  wider range of academic contributions to science and society. This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.
