Postdoctoral position in Informatics (Geospatial Computer Vision)

About the position

NHH in Bergen, Norway, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in informatics with a specialisation in geospatial computer vision at the Department of Business and Management Science. The duration of the position is three years. A fourth year can be negotiated for candidates who want to teach and have a background that matches the department’s course portfolio.

NHH seeks a postdoctoral research scientist who is both creative and intellectually ambitious. This position presents a remarkable opportunity for a dynamic, early-career scientist to spearhead innovations in the realm of climate services and to actively contribute to the establishment of a climate-resilient society.

The candidate appointed is expected to fulfill the growing need for informatics expertise at NHH. Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD degree in informatics or a closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a background in photogrammetry and remote sensing that is useful for analysing satellite data to quantify emissions. Applicants should demonstrate a strong potential for high-quality research.

The candidate appointed will become a member of the Equinor Akademia group that works on emissions from energy products and specialise in techno-economic analyses of carbon-intensive industrial sectors. The candidate will actively participate in collaborations with Climate Futures, a Centre for Research-Based Innovation (SFI) supported by the Research Council of Norway and boasting numerous partners from both the public and private sectors. The candidate may also engage in interactive collaborations with research partners, such as the Norwegian Computing Centre and NORCE Analytics.

When evaluating applicants, a strong emphasis will be placed on international experience and the capacity to engage in discussions on applied research with third-sector and industry partners. In the event of equivalent qualifications, female applicants will be given preference. 

The Department of Business and Management Science has high ambitions in terms of research and offers a stimulating work environment. The department delivers teaching and supervision in NHH’s programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. levels, as well as executive programs. The department is responsible for mathematics, statistics, and programming courses in NHH’s bachelor’s programs and is also the main contributor to a master profile in Business Analytics.

About the Equinor Akademia Project on Emissions from Energy Products

The Equinor Akademia project on emissions from energy products is a collaborative venture with the research center Climate Futures which involves partnerships between NHH, the Center for Business Research (SNF), the Nansen Center, NORCE, the Norwegian Computing Centre, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, Statistics Norway (SSB), and the University of Bergen. NORCE serves as the hosting institution for Climate Futures.

The Equinor Akademia group at the Department of Business and Management Science is a newly established unit with a comprehensive objective: to develop a long-term, open-source repository dedicated to the emissions associated with energy products (thermal coal, metcoal, oil, and natural gas) utilised as inputs in the power and steel sector. The applicant will aid in the construction of the repository and actively contribute to the collection, distribution, storage, analysis, and presentation of economic and environmental data.

In pursuit of this ambitious goal, the group will collaborate with various partners to co-create improved methods and practices for the techno-economic analysis of different industries. The expansive scope and commitment of the project underscore the undeniable need for a multidisciplinary approach, uniting climate scientists, computer scientists, economists, and statisticians with industrial partners, as well as non-profit organisations like the Environmental Defense Fund.
