The Norwegian Red Cross (NorCross) is part of the Red Cross Red Crescent (RCRC) Movement, the world’s largest humanitarian network with millions of volunteers operating in 190 countries. The RCRC Movement’s mission is to alleviate human suffering, protect life and health, and uphold human dignity especially during armed conflicts and other emergencies.

Duties and responsibilities

This advertisement concerns application for training with subsequent admission to our Emergency Response Roster (ER) roster as a Paediatric Nurse Delegate. It does not concern a specific, nor permanent, position within the Norwegian Red Cross.

An Emergency Response Unit (ERU), a field hospital deployment, is designed to offer immediate assistance and is normally operational for up to four months. An ERU is composed of trained delegates who deploy with standardized equipment. The Norwegian Red Cross (NorCross) has specialized in ERUs (Emergency Response Units) offering immediate medical assistance, health services and public health, as well as psychosocial support, water, and sanitation.

NorCross maintains a roster of trained specialists (delegates) ready to be deployed anywhere on short notice in response to international emergencies (natural disasters, conflicts or other health emergencies). Delegates work closely with the local Red Cross-National Society to provide specific services where local infrastructure is damaged, temporarily out of service, out of reach or insufficient to cope with the needs.

NorCross’ ERU delegate roster consists of persons who are able to respond to an international health emergency on short notice. Most of the ER Roster delegates have full time employment with permission from their employer to take leave of absence if asked by NorCross to go on mission. The length of a mission is usually a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks, and the delegate receives a salary from the Red Cross while on mission, in addition to the daily allowances-if applicable.

Qualifications

The Paediatric Nurse Delegate will be responsible for:

  • Undertake professional/clinical activities to support the work of the ERU.
  •   Support and coordinate ERU local staff to undertake professional/technical activities. This includes supervision, mentoring and training.
  •   Given the nature of ERU and the context, the intensity and types of activities may vary by rotation (set up, running of the operation and handover).

Multi-skilled delegates are essential in supporting roles in an emergency health operation.
