The University of Stavanger invites applications for a position as Professor II (Adjunct Professor) of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The position is in Societal Safety, Radicalization and Extremism, especially focusing on how to prevent radicalization in the Higher Education sector. The appointee will be given special responsibility for advising the Board of Societal Safety and Emergency Management within Higher education on the topic of prevention of radicalization and extremism.

The position of Professor II constitutes 20 percent of a full position. The appointment is valid for a period of three years and is connected to the professor's main position.The position is externally funded.

Qualifications within the areas of creativity, innovationand commercialization of research will be given emphasis in appointments to academic positions at the university.

The responsibilities comprise research, supervision, teaching, and student assessment related to the field above.

The appointee must be able to document extensive academic qualifications within central areas of the academic field and, through her/his work, to have demonstrated scientific (evartistic) competence within oneor more fields of the discipline.

The appointee should be able to document teaching skills.

The position of Professor II is salaried according to the State SalaryCode, l.pl 17.510, code 1013, ltr 69 - 79, of NOK 600.000 - 760.000 per annum. In special cases higher salaries may apply.

Job description

Administratively the position is placed at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The position will be a part of the SEROS - Center for Risk Management and Societal Safety research group. The core of the center's research and education activities is theoretical, methodological and practical premises for safety and security. The scope of these activities involves a close working relationship with policymakers within many areas of the Norwegian government and a range of private sector practitioners. SEROS is currently a national reference point for risk and safety studies and holds the potential of becoming an international center of excellence within several of its research areas.

The academic field for the position is Societal Safety, Radicalization and Extremism, especially focusing on how to prevent radicalization in the education sector. The University of Stavanger has been appointed an academic advisory role in regard to Societal Safety and emergency preparedness in the higher education sector, hereunder to assist and give guidance to the sector on how to prevent radicalization and extremism.  We are looking for a candidate with extensive research in prevention of radicalization and extremism, preferably connected to the education sector.

Current responsibilities for Professor II is participation in the scientific advisory board, lectures, supervision and participate in applications for externally funded research projects within prevention of radicalization and extremism.

The appointee will be given special responsibility for advising the Board of Societal Safety and Emergency Management within Higher education on the topic of prevention of radicalization and extremism.

Applicants will be screened by an expert committee on the basis of submitted material. The committee particularly considers the applicants' submitted scholarly and scientific work and their teaching skills. Experience from popularization, journalism, university politics and administration, and other relevant and documented qualifications for the position can also be considered.

Documentation and material to be considered by the expert committee must have been submitted by the closing date for applications. References can be enclosed in the application or be made available on request.

Applicants on the short list will be invited to an interview and asked to give a test lecture before the Committee on Appointments makes its final decision. This decision will also include an assessment of the applicants' personal suitability for the position.
