Unit Leader available at the Unit for Preclinical Proton Therapy and Imaging
A unit leader position is available at the Preclinical Proton Therapy and Imaging Unit, Institute for Cancer Research, Oslo University Hospital.
In connection with establishing a new proton therapy centre at the Radium Hospital, the Division of Cancer Medicine at Oslo University Hospital is establishing a new core facility for Preclinical Proton Therapy and imaging organised under the Department of Core Facilities at the Institute for Cancer Research.
The Department of Core Facilities runs seven regional and national technology platforms financed by the Southern-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority and the Research Council of Norway. The Department aims to provide state-of-the-art services and competence in advanced technologies, thus contributing to research groups' international competitiveness. The Department, with 20 employees, is organised into four units: Advanced Microscopy, Flow Cytometry, Genomics and Bioinformatics and a new unit for Preclinical Proton Therapy and Imaging.
The Unit Leader will have administrative and personnel responsibility for the Proton Therapy and Preclinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging Core Facilities with 2-3 staff. The core facilities deliver advanced services within preclinical imaging using magnetic resonance imaging and in vivo imaging systems, and the candidate is expected to build a successful service for preclinical proton therapy. The core facilities provide cutting-edge competence and services to research groups within the Institute for Cancer Research and Oslo University Hospital and external academic and commercial groups. The unit leader reports to the Head of the Department of Core Facilities.
Institute for Cancer Research
The Institute for Cancer Research (ICR), organised as a part of the Division of Cancer Medicine at Oslo University Hospital, conducts cutting-edge cancer research ranging from basic cancer biology to translational and clinical research. It is Norway's leading cancer research institute and has a strong international standing. ICR is organised into seven departments, six research departments, plus the Department of Core Facilities. ICR has 25 research groups, more than 30 project groups (>55 PIs), and approximately 390 employees.

Duties and responsibilities
- Administrative and personnel responsibility for facilities within the unit, delivering services within key technologies for research groups within the Institute, the hospital and externally.
- Responsible for ensuring that core facilities meet the guidelines for service defined by Oslo University Hospital and the Southern-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority.
- Responsible for further development of the core facilities, including new technologies and services, and ensuring sufficient service capacity.
- Establish a successful preclinical proton therapy service, including developing a user base to finance the core facility activity.
- Responsible for defining and following individual employees' specific objectives and personal development.
- Economic responsibility for the individual core facilities, including funding applications and service invoicing.
- Overall operational responsibility for service and reporting to Oslo University Hospital and funding agencies.
- Must contribute to good cooperation with similar core facilities at Oslo University Hospital and other core facilities at the Institute for Cancer Research.
- The unit leader may use up to 20% of the time in relevant research associated with the technologies offered by the unit.
Qualifications
The successful candidate should have theoretical and practical competence in preclinical research within proton therapy and/or the effects of ionising radiation. She or he must be a team player with good communication, organisation, and leadership skills and be service-oriented. Proven experience in running successful core facility service functions will be a benefit. The position is vacant from January 2024.
- PhD degree in physics, biophysics, imaging, medical technology, or related fields.
- Documented experience within preclinical research.
- Experience with the effects of ionising radiation will be an advantage.
- Experience in operating and developing core facility activities will be an advantage.
- Service-minded, good communication skills.
- Structured, systematic, and result oriented.
- Good relevant national and international network.
