We hereby announce a position as Research Leader in the Marine Ecology group. The department is led by Fiona Provan. The Marine Ecology group is based in Mekjarvik (Stavanger), with several members in Bergen. 

The research leader has academic responsibility for the group, including coordinating responsibility for developing research fields and new research ideas.

The research leader has personnel responsibility for employees in the research group as well as responsibility for the professional development for the individual, and the group as a whole.

The research leader must deliver on given key indicators for the activity, including responsibility for the result in the group's project portfolio. In addition to research management, the position has a research component. This will vary in relation to the size of the group and by further agreement.

Furthermore, the research leader has HSE responsibility for activities carried out in the research group.

The research leader will have overall responsibility for NORCE's marine research station in Mekjarvik, Stavanger.


Task

The research leader is part of the department's management group and will play an important role in the strategic development of the department. The research leader will participate in defining the department's research strategy, facilitate applications across research groups and departments in NORCE, and contribute to general and strategic research dissemination from the department.

The research leader shall follow up the group's members, applications, and project portfolio, including holding regular research group meetings, following up timekeeping and project coverage. In addition, ensuring quality assurance of project applications and projects in collaboration with project managers.

The research leader shall facilitate collaboration within the research group and across the research groups in the department, as well as in NORCE across locations. The research leader must stimulate good dialogue between the various subject groups and ensure a good flow of information between the head of department and the research group.


Competence requirements

The research leader must have a higher scientific background (preferably PhD level). Experience from industry (marine-based industries) and applied project work (innovation projects) is an advantage.

We are looking for a goal-oriented and motivating leader with good leadership skills, collaboration skills and good competence in relevant disciplines. Applicants must have solid research experience and experience in designing offers / applications to the EU, the Research Council of Norway, industry and public administration. The applicant must have documented project leadership experience and experience from personnel management.

The research leader will be a driving force in the further development of the group and the department in NORCE. The research leader must be experienced working in teams and individually, have the ability to drive projects, and create initiative and collaboration both in the research group, and between the research groups.

Language: Norwegian / English (proficient both written and oral)

Place of work: Mekjarvik, Stavanger.

Some travelling must be expected.

The Climate and Environment division at NORCE consists of three new research departments: Ocean and Environment, Biotechnology and Circular Economy, and Climate Dynamics. There are currently 11 research groups in the division. Ocean and Environment is the largest department with over 90 researchers / technicians. The Biotechnology and Circular Economy department consists of 42 researchers / technicians, and the Climate Dynamics department consists of over 60 members.

There is great growth in the divisions, and it is estimated that there will be over 200 employees by the end of 2022. During the spring of 2022, the divisions will also establish 3 cross-cutting thematic focus areas. The divisions are led from locations in Stavanger and Tromsø and is headed by Executive Vice President Trond Martin Dokken.

Our researchers contribute knowledge to achieve sustainable management of natural resources and the environment. We characterize environmental contaminants and study how ecosystems are affected by human activity, climate change and pollution. We develop methodology and technology to monitor the coast, fjords and sea. We evaluate environmental risk and work with our partners in industry and administration to ensure knowledge-based decision support. The group has key activities related to the green shift and our researchers lead major projects related to aquaculture, microplastics, new marine-based industries and the bioeconomy.
