To fulfill this ambition, we are looking for highly motivated Expedition Leaders to be part of our expedition teams. 

The Expedition Leader is the leader of the Expedition Team onboard each ship and will report to Captain on board, and VP Expeditions ashore.
 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Working closely with Master and Hotel Manager, ensure the delivery of the best guest experience within the ability of the staff, crew and itinerary. This will involve some work at home before boarding.
  • You have the overview and management of the entire ship-based Expedition Product/Operation.
  • Financial responsibility for the third-party excursion program and our own produced activities.
  • Responsible for maintaining budget control of the ships operational budget for the Expedition Team, and equipment.
  • Line Manager for AEL, EC and Expedition Team. Distribution of work and tasking of all team members.
  • Planning and establishing the daily sailing program in co-operation with Ships Management, including finding and suggesting alternative itineraries where required due to environmental and weather conditions.
  • Planning, execution and supervision of landings, including safety equipment in co-operation with the Chief Officer and other departments as required. 
  • Ensure Compliance with permits, permissions and company procedures.
  • Liaise with other vessels operating in the area.
  • Responsible for planning guest daily activities.
  • Responsible for the management of the on-board Educational and Science Programs, community engagement and delivery of Guest Briefings.
  • Work with Expedition Management on board (AEL/EC) to manage the team on a day-to-day basis.
  • Distribution of work and tasking on a long – medium- and short-term basis. Ensuring all team members have enough hours of rest during the day and the week.
  • Ordering necessary consumable materials in cooperation with the Head of Expedition
  • Management ashore.
  • Manage the operation of maintenance and cleaning within his/her area of responsibility, including all expedition equipment.
  • Coordinate, packing, transfer of equipment between Expedition vessels as required.
  • Ensures that the Company's policies and procedures in relation to guest service are followed.
  • Provide appropriate briefing according to region (e.g. IAATO/AECO)
  • Mandatory reporting, including a PVR (Post Visit Report) and Expedition Leader’s reports after each trip.
  • New landing site and Itinerary feedback report.
  • Monitor and respond to guest feedback including LOOPON.
  • Inform the Ship Management about all abnormalities, non-conformities or accidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Responsible for follow-up of the Operating and Safety Management Systems within his/her area of responsibility.
  • Ensure staff has gone through the in-house training program, to the part of operation they will be handling.
  • Supervision of Social Media content posted on the voyages, follow up of on-board media reps and requests from Hurtigruten.
  • Overseeing management of special groups.
  • Feedback on staff to Staffing Manager

Qualifications

  • The Expedition Leader role is unique, and there is no set qualification. You might have a degree in a relevant subject, or a track record of delivering excellent guest service. You might be a specialist in tourism or in one of the many regions we visit, but you will be adaptable to all.
  • The working language onboard is English and it is essential to speak and write fluent English (preferably applications should therefore be sent in English)
  • Desirable to speak fluent German, French or a Scandinavian language
  • Desirable to have qualifications or relevant experience in polar boating and operations in areas where polar bears are found.
  • The successful candidate will need to obtain the following certificates before boarding (you do not need hold these certificates before applying):
  • Health certificate for sea (Seafarers Medical)
  • Basic safety training (STCW)
  • Crowd and crisis management (STCW)
  • Security Awareness for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties (STCW)

  • You can show that you can work with a diverse range of people. On your team you may have professors through to trainees and you’ll be able to encourage, manage and where necessary have difficult conversations with them all.
  • You understand ship-based tourism, the relationship with and responsibilities of the Captain of the vessel, our permitting authorities and industry bodies.
  • You can enthuse and manage large groups of guests, giving them the best possible experience and you’re able to cope with their reactions when things don’t go according to plan.
  • Capable of working under stressful conditions, you can manage your own time and welfare, delegating where possible and retaining responsibility where necessary.
