Signals and images are often data representations of physical events, usually based onsensor and measurement data, such as medical signals and images like MRI, CT,ultrasound, ECG, and biological data.

Signal and image processing methods concern the analysis, synthesis and modification ofinformation carrying. The connection between the data and what they representis thus central within the discipline.
Machine learning is tightly connected to Statistical learning including deep learning methods, and concerns methods for designingsystems for e.g. classification and regression, where the systems learn fromdata. Data processing and statistical machine learning have for a long timebeen partially overlapping disciplines, and machine learning methods constitutean increasingly important area of processing. In order to strengthen theprofile of the Section for Medical ICT towards machine learning and to enableopportunities for opening new application areas, a position targeting machinelearning for analysis, classification, prediction and data mining of (largeamounts of) multi-dimensional data, typically measurements in time and/or spacewill be established.

The successful candidate is expected, together with existing researchers, to jointly develop a world-class research communitywithin machine learning for medical applications.

The position announced here will be affiliated With the Intervention Centre, Oslo University Hospital.

Arbeidsoppgaver

Senior researcher is expected to play a leading role in research and development in  machine learning in cooperation with existing staff at the Centre.  The successful candidate is also expected to establish collaboration with relevant colleagues at other departments at the hospital, University of Oslo (UiO) and/or Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

The focus area of this position is towards machine learning applied to analysis, classification, prediction and data mining of (large amounts of) multi-dimensional data, typically measurements in time and/or space. Examples comprise medical data like MRI, CT, ultrasound, capsule endoscopic video, laparoscopic video, EEG, ECG, position data, etc.  Application areas include detection of anomaly (polyp, tumor), prediction, extraction of "hidden" information, image classification, analysis, decision support systems and the interplay between machine learning and existing mathematical models of physical systems and phenomena. The successful candidate will need to have experience and knowledge at a high international level within machine learning and its utilization in relevant application areas preferably in clinical medicine.
Research activities are expected to have a strong international profile and impact, with a long-term perspective and to be concentrated around fundamental and applied research challenges and development of new enabling technologies.

The research activities at the Centre rely mainly on external funding. The successful applicant is expected to engage extensively in applications for external research funding, e.g. from the Research Council of Norway, European research, Health South East Trust, the industry sector, and other available sources.

In addition to research and education, the researcher is expected to disseminate relevant parts of the research to a wider audience.

The researcher is also expected to participate in the formal management of research and development and other relevant areas of activity in agreement with the head of section for medical ICT.

Kvalifikasjoner

The applicant is required to have a doctoral degree or equivalent in a relevant area and demonstrate professional qualifications in essential areas of machine learning as defined in the job description, with profound scientific competence within one or more of these areas.

For the position, the applicant with international experience and a strong publication record in terms of papers in peer-reviewed journals and other relevant international publication channels including patents is preferred.  The applicant should document the ability to obtain external research grants from relevant funding sources, be internationally recognized and be able to initiate and lead research at a high international level.

For the position, the applicant with supervision experience of students (MSc, PhD) or similar experience qualifying for such work is a plus.

The applicant should demonstrate communicative skills that qualify for excellent communication, dissemination and exploitation, and have good collaboration skills necessary for joint interdisciplinary projects.

Industrial experience and relevant collaboration with industry will be considered as highly beneficial.
