As Director/CEO and chief scientific officer you will be responsible for establishing ECCSEL as the preferred European research infrastructure, contributing to deployment  of CCS technology. In this unique Pan European role you will be expected to: 

• Shape the future of ECCSEL as the European mechanism for coordinated investments in carbon dioxide capture, storage and utilization research facilities – through strategic planning, fundraising efforts and focused interaction.
• Secure access to world class CCS research facilities for researchers across Europe, through effective collaboration and increased utilization of the Service Providers, i.e. the research facilities which are parts of  ECCSEL.
• Lead the scientific and technical development as well as the overall operation of the distributed research infrastructure. 
• Build strong and effective pan-European and further international relationships, with a broad range of stakeholders within and outside the consortium. 
• Collaborate effectively with the ECCSEL General Assembly, the Research Infrastructure Coordination Committee (RICC), the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) and the Ethics and Environmental Advisory Board.  
• Lead the ECCSEL Operations Centre (OC) in Trondheim, including budget responsibility and direct management of the OC staff (Project manager, finance officer and contributions from dedicated staff from the consortium)

We are inviting contact with candidates that have a higher university degree in Technology or Natural Sciences. Relevant scientific CCS knowledge is desirable, in combination with a documented track record from securing public-private capital investments on senior industry and governmental level.

The Director must also demonstrate management capabilities, including experience in financial/budgetary management, organizational development and team leadership in an international organization. Experience from stakeholder engagement with industrial, governmental and research communities in an international context will also be required. 

Experience from the European Research Area, ESFRI process as well as on key funding mechanisms available will be beneficial. Connections with relevant key European universities, research institutes and industry will also be valued.

Applications for the position are encouraged from citizens of the European Union and Associated Countries, and the Director is expected to have his/her daily office at the Operations Centre in Trondheim, Norway.  Regular travel to service providers, national nodes of ECCSEL and stakeholders to build international relationships, is an important part of the role. The Director will be appointed for a five year period and can be re-appointed once. A competitive salary, based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate, will be offered. Employment will be in Norway and follow Norwegian employment law.

The European Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Laboratory Infrastructure (ECCSEL) was established in June 2017 as a permanent pan-European distributed research infrastructure, an ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium). Within the 5 European founding Member countries, 14 service providers offer open access to 55 world class research facilities across Europe. ECCSEL is expected to grow both in terms of Members and heavy investments in upgraded and new facilities. The Headquarters with ECCSEL’s Operations Centre is located in Trondheim, Norway.
