Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Technology, Business and Maritime Education has one available PhD position in maritime safety and human factors.

The PhD student will be part of the maritime safety research group (MarSafe) of nautical studies. The place of employment is Haugesund, Norway.
You will be working with us on a number of projects, mainly on the topic of S-mode. The concept of S-mode as a default setting for navigation displays was proposed under the agenda of the IMO e-Navigation initiative. This project expands on earlier studies by using human-centred design (HCD), collecting a broad sample of multi-national user needs, making and testing prototypes and integrating results into a guidance document for submission to the IMO and for use by equipment manufacturers.

Duties
Appointment is for a period of four years. The position does include 25 % teaching duties.

The PhD-student will apply for admission at the PhD programme in Nautical Operations. The Nautical Operations programme is a joint programme by HVL, UiT, NTNU and USN.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a Master's degree or equivalent higher education qualifications in social sciences/psychology/Human Factors or a maritime discipline. Seafaring experience is an advantage as is knowledge in HCD, HMI and/or human performance in the maritime domain.
Furthermore, the candidate is expected to have residency for three months at other institutions abroad. In addition to formal qualifications, emphasis is placed on motivation for research, ability to work independently and focused, ability to work in a team, good communication skills and thorough knowledge of the English language.

Salary
The position is remunerated according to the state salary scale. A 2% compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted. The successful applicant must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at any time.
