Aker BioMarine is a leading biotechnology company developing krill-derived products for consumer health and wellness and animal nutrition. The company has a strong position in its industry and operates with three Norwegian-registered factory trawlers in Antarctica: FT Saga Sea, FV Antarctic Sea, and FV Antarctic Endurance in addition to our newbuilt cargo and passenger vessel MV Antarctic Provider. The company’s main office is in Oslo, Norway, with an additional Norwegian office in Ålesund and a logistics base shifting product and crew in Montevideo, Uruguay.

We are now looking for two Quality Controllers who will work on board our vessels in Antarctica

Quality Controller

QC is overall responsible and in charge of all product quality controls and quality systems on board the vessel. Included are control of products and production lines. Furthermore, responsible for maintaining and operating the laboratory, as well as maintenance and ordering spare parts for components/instruments involved in the QC department and for follow up HSE strategy and HACCAP on board the vessel.

Responsibility during operation











  • Overall responsible for all QC procedures in the Factory department
  • Good knowledge of all production procedures and ensure that they are followed.
  • Follow up and archive GMP relevant training records according to Competence Matrix
  • If applicable follow up QC assistant
  • Responsible for internal audits during operation
  • Perform inspections of cleaning
  • Identify and report possible improvements related to production, safety, sampling, analysis etc.
  • Ordering of consumables for QC lab, using the purchasing ERP system
  • Ensure that QC lab inventory is kept up to date.
  • Report to Bridge and Main Office as required
  • Report in ShipAdmin as required
  • Create handover notes for oncoming QC

Safety responsibility

  • HSE representative
  • Secretary for all HSE meetings. The position is a link between all crew members and Captain related to HSE issues.
  • Call for HSE meetings on regular intervals or when needed.
  • Take part in regular sanitary inspections and Safety Officers inspection of safety equipment. Sign documents from inspections.
  • Forward comments from such inspections to Captain and DPA
  • Be familiar with duties according to "station bill" and muster lists for life rafts.
  • Wear safety equipment as required.
  • HSE MS: Comply fully with the requirements in the Company’s HSE MS system, national as well as international rules and legislations and other precautions currently valid on board.
  • Drills: According to “Emergency Plan”
  • HSE Activities: Actively take part in HSE meetings and programs, event reporting etc.

Desired characteristics

  • Experience from working at sea is preferred
  • Structured and able to work independently
  • Accurate and conscientious
  • Good communication skills both verbal and in writing, English is work language
  • Positive mind-set, solution-oriented
  • Enjoys new challenges.

Qualifications

  • Experience with laboratory work.
  • Education within laboratory, food technology or chemistry
  • Desire to start an offshore career.
  • Have good English knowledge (AKBM`s work language)
  • Enjoy working in an international team.
  • Appreciate new challenges, seeking new tasks and continuous improvements.
  • Systematic and responsible with drive and self-motivation

  • 12/7 shift; 12 hours on, 12 hours off, 7 days a week for the entire rotation
  • Shift rotation: One shift on; approx. 85 days and two shifts off, averaging 150 sea days per year and about 120 - 130 days off between trips. Travel to and from fishing ground is about one week each way at the beginning and the end of the rotation, using ports in Uruguay, Chile, and Falkland Islands for embarkation on cargo and passenger vessel, bringing crew to fishing vessels on fishing ground.
