2-3 Research scientist positions within ocean modeling

About the position

We are announcing two permanent positions and one temporary position in the field of ocean modeling
and data assimilation. The successful candidates will be employed at the Division of Ocean and Ice in
Oslo and collaborate with experienced scientists at MET Norway as well as partner institutions in
Norway and abroad.

Responsibility / work tasks

Position 1: in observation networks and data assimilation (permanent)

The successful candidates will be tasked with designing and conducting Observation System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) using MET Norway's coastal ocean forecasting system. The main objective for the positions is to support the design of Norway's future coastal ocean observation network, with particular emphasis on the deployment of autonomous profilers and HF radar stations, and the optimal combination of in situ and satellite observations. The forecasting system is based on with a 4D-Var analysis scheme.

Position 2: in regional ocean modeling and data analysis (permanent)

The successful candidate will be tasked to improve and maintain MET Norway's forecast models for coastal ocean circulation using ROMS. Some of the work will be on maintaining operational value chains, which require a good understanding of data management standards and robust code development skills. Research in this position is targeted towards higher resolution modeling for the coastal domain, two-way nesting and ensemble prediction methods. A part of the responsibility is to carry out model reanalysis and hindcasts using the operational model system.

Position 3: in ocean and biogeochemical coupling (2 year temporary position)

The successful candidate will be tasked to investigate coupling schemes incorporating ROMS and a biogeochemical component. The work requires close cooperation with partner institutions in Norway and requires a good understanding of both physical oceanography and marine ecology.

The work in all 3 positions will be carried out in close collaboration with scientists at the Division for Ocean and Ice, scientists at partner institutions, and other divisions at MET Norway such as the IT division and respective divisions responsible for data management and observations. We thus seek candidates who enjoy working in diverse teams, and proactively seeks interaction with useful resources beyond their immediate work environment.

Qualifications and expected skills

  • PhD or MSc in oceanography, meteorology, physics or applied mathematics is required.
  • Proven knowledge in contemporary data assimilation techniques and experience with data assimilative models for sea-ice, ocean, or the atmosphere is required for positions 1.
  • Experience with scientific software development and a sound understanding of physicaloceanography is required for position 2.
  • Knowledge within both marine ecology and physical oceanography is required for positions 3.
  • Experience in numerical modeling and peer-review publishing of results is expected
  • Experience and proven knowledge in applied mathematics/scientific programming in the Linux environment is required.
  • Experience with high performance computing is required
  • Knowledge of ML methods is an advantage, in particular experience with convolutional neural networks, Bayesian networks, and reinforcement learning
  • Experience in software development in Python is required and knowledge of Fortran is beneficial.
  • Experience with software version control (e.g. git) or other project management tools is required.
  • Particular emphasis will be given on the candidates ability to work as part of a team.
  • Fluency in English, as well as good command of Norwegian (or willingness to learn Norwegian is required.
  • Independence and self-motivation as well as excellent work ethic and commitment to the job are expected.

We can offer

  • Salary on the Norwegian governmental salary scales dependent on qualifications and experience (NOK 534.400 - 702.100 pr. year, higher salary can be negotiated in case the selected applicant has excellent qualifications).
  • Flexible working conditions.
  • Membership in Statens pensjonskasse (SPK), the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (2%
  • Deducted from gross salary) one of the best pension funds in Norway.
  • Insurances and mortgage through SPK.
  • A pleasant working environment.
  • The first six months are a mutual trial period.

Contact

More information about the positions can be obtained by contacting Scientist Ann Kristin Sperrevik (+47 91183179, ann.kristin.sperrevik@met.no), or Head of Division for Ocean and Ice Johannes Röhrs (+47416 54 886; johannesro@met.no).

Additional information

We emphasize diversity and therefore encourage all those who are qualified to apply regardless of age, gender, functional capacity, ethnic background or gaps in the resume. MET Norway participates in the state's inclusion efforts and aims to get more people with disabilities or gaps in their CVs into work. The working conditions will be facilitated for employees with disabilities. Applicants who inform that they have reduced functional capacity will be invited to interview if they are qualified.

If an applicant does not wish to be registered on the public application list, the applicant will need to give a reasonable argued justification. Information about the applicant can still be published. If the wish to not be registered on the public application list is denied, the applicant will be informed prior to the disclosure.

Om arbeidsgiveren

Modern meteorology requires management and analysis of enormous amounts of data, and offers great and exciting professional challenges. Since the institute was established in 1866, the Norwegian meteorologists have played a key role in this development. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) is today an internationally leading operational forecast and research institution with expertise in operational meteorology, oceanography and climate science.
The primary area of interest coincides with the national focus area, northern Europe, North Atlantic and the Arctic. The division for Ocean and Ice conducts world class research and operates 24/7 forecasting of storm surge, ocean currents, hydrography, waves and sea-ice on regional to coastal scales. These models provide input to downstream services such as oil spill drift models and search-and-rescue support. The work is carried out in collaboration with national and international partners.
