We are now looking for a Factory Mechanic who will work on board our vessels in Antarctica

Factory Mechanic

The Factory Mechanic reports to the Factory Manager and the Chief Engineer on board and is responsible for Repair and Maintenance (R&M) of all processing equipment, packing equipment and storage equipment in the factory department onboard the fishing vessel, making sure that all such equipment is in good working condition. He/she is a key member of the on-board factory team and coordinates the daily R&M work along with the factory mechanic assistant. Furthermore, the factory mechanic is responsible for follow-up of purchase orders, ensuring there are sufficient spare parts for the processing equipment onboard, making sure that all orders are in line with given budgets. The Factory Mechanic may also be set to repair other machinery and being involved in other R&M operations onboard the ship.

The position is not set to a specific vessel and may change during the season if required or by request from management.

The company has implemented a safety management system according to The International Safety Management Code (ISM) by IMO. All employed by Aker BioMarine Antarctic Services AS, shall know their responsibilities within this system.

Responsibility during operation

  • Repair and Maintenance (R&M) of on-board krill meal and krill oil plant
  • Perform preventive maintenance of factory equipment
  • Monitoring equipment wear, planning, performing, and reporting maintenance jobs and order spare parts for factory, using the ERP system TM Master
  • Coordinate daily R&M work to be performed by factory mechanic assistant
  • Prepare all orders and jobs linked to annual shipyard/lay-up along with Factory Manager
  • Main responsible and coordinator of factory R&M work during shipyard and lay-ups
  • Participate in other tasks as requested by Factory Manager or Chief Engineer
  • Assist factory team in production process
  • Keep inventory up to date at all time
  • Make reports as requested and required including weekly reports and handover

Professional qualifications:

Relevant technical and mechanical competence including welding skills. Experience in the operation and maintenance of rotating equipment such as centrifuges, gear boxes, pumps, electro motors etc. Knowledge of servicing processing equipment, steam, condensate and hydraulic systems is an advantage.

CV must reflect required qualifications specified.

  • 12/7 shift; 12 hours on, 12 hours off, 7 days a week for the entire rotation
  • Shift rotation: One shift on (ca three months incl. travels) and two shifts off, averaging 150 sea days per year and about 120 - 130 days off between trips. Travel to and from fishing ground is about one week each way at the beginning and the end of the rotation, using ports in Uruguay, Chile, and Falkland Islands for embarkation on cargo and passenger vessel, bringing crew to fishing vessels on fishing ground.
